With 10:48 remaining in the third quarter and the score 9-4 in favor of Boston College, junior attacker Katie DeSimone caused a turnover from Hunter Roman, who turned around and checked DeSimone. Roman was dealt a yellow card, and it seemed like the tides might be turning in the Blue Devils’ favor.

Shortly after, five-star prospect and top-ranked Mackenzie Mgbako announced his decommitment, adding another foil to the developing roster puzzle for head coach Jon Scheyer in year two.

With the cherry blossoms blooming and spring on the horizon, Duke is officially back in action. Last year, the Blue Devils’ campaign was a strong one as they continued to boost the program’s reputation under the guidance of head coach Megan Cooke Carcagno. After winning its sixth-consecutive Carolina Cup by sweeping all five races, Duke continued to have strong showings in its competitions with an 18-race sweep at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invite. As a contender for the ACC title, the Blue Devils fell short of the crown, earning third place off an 82-point performance bolstered by a first-place Second Varsity Four finish. With their third-consecutive bid to the NCAA Championships, Duke placed 16th after three days of competition.

In the bottom of the seventh, a gloom had settled over the Blue Devil dugout. While they led 1-0 for most of the contest, Notre Dame pulled out all the stops in the top of the inning to earn the lead at 3-1. Duke needed a Hail Mary to eke out a victory, and a win seemed near impossible. Then Ana Gold stepped up to the plate.
