For the second time in three games, the No. 12 women's basketball team accomplished something it failed to do last season. The first of those feats was winning at North Carolina. The second came Wednesday night, as the Blue Devils defeated the No. 17 Clemson Tigers 74-63 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

A few members of the women's tennis team had a warm-up to the spring season this past weekend in Chapel Hill at the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoors. Junior Karen O'Sullivan and sophomore Laura Zifer competed in the singles competition, while O'Sullivan teamed with junior Luanne Spadea in doubles.

The wrestling team defeated The Citadel so fast on Sunday that it had time to catch some of the second quarter of the Super Bowl. The Blue Devils knocked off the Bulldogs 33-11, winning all but three of their matches. The win upped Duke's record to 2-2 overall, while The Citadel fell to 4-10.

After the No. 12 women's basketball team defeated North Carolina 86-85 on a last-second shot Wednesday, many people affiliated with the game were making comparisons to a 1994-95 UNC-Duke contest. Both were filled with high amounts of emotion. Both were won by Duke in the waning seconds.

As hard as it may seem, the No. 12 women's basketball team is going to have to put Wednesday night's 86-85 win into the back of its minds for now. The Blue Devils have another game Saturday against Florida State that won't be as exciting, but nevertheless is as important.

Three years ago, the women's basketball game between Duke and North Carolina wasn't even considered a part of the two teams' historic rivalry by one of its parties. Duke head coach Gail Goestenkors remembers playing the Tar Heels her first year at the helm of the Blue Devils and seeing UNC singing, dancing and relaxed during warm-ups. Duke, on the other hand, was serious and focused. It didn't matter--Carolina destroyed Duke.

With nearly one minute left in Saturday night's men's basketball game, the Cameron crowd starting chanting, "We want Hall. Put in Hall." A couple of seconds into that chant, one Cameron Crazy turned to another and asked, "What's his first name?"

The scenario is all too familiar by now. The No. 13 women's basketball team plays a lethargic first half, a better second half and eventually pulls out a win. The final part of that series is what concerned Duke head coach Gail Goestenkors the most, so she couldn't be too upset after her team knocked off Georgia Tech 78-66 Wednesday night in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Ask most college coaches, and the thought of replacing a potential All-American with a freshman in a tight game would be laughed away. But making that seemingly insane maneuver is what Duke women's basketball head coach Gail Goestenkors did when she substituted Payton Black for Tyish Hall in the second half of Sunday's contest against Wake Forest.

WINSTON-SALEM--For only the second time this year, the No. 16 women's basketball team entered the locker room at halftime without the lead as Wake Forest held a 42-34 advantage. But as they have done time and again against teams that jumped out to an early lead, the Blue Devils were able to regroup and capture a 74-64 victory.

With 6.1 seconds left in the game and a 60-59 lead against No. 8 Virginia on Monday evening, the No. 16 women's basketball team knew which Wahoo would get the ball. Head coach Gail Goestenkors even knew what play her coaching counterpart, Debbie Ryan, would call.

Four points separate the No. 16 women's basketball team from being atop the Atlantic Coast Conference and its current 1-2 ACC mark. The Blue Devils lost to No. 14 N.C. State 75-73 on Jan. 4, then fell to No. 6 Virginia 61-60 four nights later. Still, head coach Gail Goestenkors isn't concerned with her team's current conference mark. In fact, she would rather face the tougher teams in the league earlier than later in the year.

At the 13:45 mark in the first half, the No. 17 women's basketball team had committed three more turnovers than the four points it had put on the scoreboard. Duke was down 10 to the Seton Hall Pirates, and it looked as if the Blue Devils' national television debut on ESPN2 would be a bust. Frustrated Blue Devil head coach Gail Goestenkors called her second time-out in three minutes.

One of the greatest rivalries in college basketball begins a new era Saturday night when the No. 18 men's basketball team faces off against No. 22 Michigan in Ann Arbor. The remnants of Michigan's highly-hyped Fab Five graduated last year, as did the Blue Devils' last link to their 1992 championship over the Wolverines. Now it's the responsibility of Jeff Capel, Ricky Price, Maurice Taylor and Robert Traylor to continue the intense competition these two teams have had over the last six years.
