Emergency room trips due to alcohol exceed last year's pace

The number of reported emergency room admissions for alcohol-related problems thus far this year is nearly double the number at the same point last year, a fact which has University officials hypothesizing about its cause and the Duke University Police Department using the data to dispute some student criticism of its role.

By all accounts, John Hope Franklin's greatest academic legacy will be his ground-breaking book "From Slavery to Freedom: A History of African Americans." But his writing process was not a labor of love. Initially cajoled by his publishers into writing the book in 1946, Franklin, 82, never considered it a pleasurable endeavor; it "grew because of diligence," he said, "not deep affection."


Keohane balks at ICC call for 'Race Day' class cancellation

Responding to mounting tension over campus race relations, 15 prominent student leaders convened at President Nan Keohane's office yesterday afternoon to present a letter asserting a course of action and soliciting her support: Declaring next Friday "Race Day," they requested that Keohane cancel classes so that all students and faculty could attend an open mike forum on the Chapel steps.
