Just a little more than five minutes into the game, Florida Gulf Coast’s surprisingly loud fans made themselves heard by chanting, “scoreboard” during the first media timeout. They probably should have waited a little bit to bring out the classic cheer, because the Cameron Crazies repeatedly responded in kind as Duke (3-0) built and protected a commanding lead.

Under head coach Paul Johnson, Georgia Tech has thrived with an unusual triple option offense, making four bowl games in as many years, including a berth to the 2010 Orange Bowl. Last week the Yellow Jackets showed just how deadly that offense could be, dropping 68 points and nearly 600 yards on a talented North Carolina defense in Chapel Hill.

Just two weeks ago a packed Wallace Wade Stadium student section rushed the field to celebrate a last-second win against North Carolina that clinched bowl eligibility and returned the Victory Bell to Durham.

Duke basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski often describes his team as a metaphorical fist, with five working as one unit infinitely greater than five individuals. For that to happen, a great team needs a glue guy who can play multiple positions, raise the energy level, and bring up the play of everyone around him.

After demolishing Virginia 42-17, Duke’s offense is averaging 45 points in its four home games. Although Anthony Boone performed admirably stepping up in place of the injured Sean Renfree, the team’s remarkable second-half defense made at least as much of an impact.

Going into Saturday’s game against Virginia, senior wide receiver Conner Vernon needed just one catch to break the ACC record for all-time receptions of 232 set by Clemson’s Aaron Kelly in 2008. It did not take him very long. Slightly more than six minutes into the first quarter of the team’s 42-17 win, Vernon caught a pass for a two-yard loss from redshirt sophomore quarterback Anthony Boone. The catch was Vernon’s 41st of year and gave the receiver a total of 555 yards on the season.

Redshirt sophomore Brandon Connette may have one of the most confusing roles in the country, playing as a quarterback, running back, wide receiver and standup tight end. Bizarrely, he is unlisted on offense on the two-deep depth chart.

Duke has not beaten a ranked opponent on the road in 41 years. The last time it happened, Stanford was the victim in 1971.

Duke could not have gotten off to a worse start.

Duke could not have gotten off to a much worse start. Just 43 seconds into the season, the Blue Devils surrendered a long touchdown on a catch-and-run by Florida International running back Kedrick Rhodes. On the ensuing possession, Duke’s offense looked just as shaky, going three and out.

Last Saturday, Duke football head coach David Cutcliffe tweeted, “Press the kicking game!! This is where the breaks are made!!!”

For a defense that might struggle to deal with All-ACC safety Matt Daniels leaving for the NFL and injuries to starters redshirt senior Jordan Byas and junior Kelby Brown, there is some good news—redshirt senior Kenny Anunike is feeling good and is ready to make a big impact on the field this season.

Since head coach John Danowski took over at Duke in 2007, his teams have gone 25-7 against conference opponents. But Duke has gone just 1-5 against Maryland, its first opponent of the tournament, over the last four years. Last season, the Terrapins became the first team to defeat Danowski’s Duke squad twice in one season with their 9-4 victory in the national semifinals.

Duke entered the weekend as part of a three team race for second place in the conference along with No. 21 North Carolina and Florida State. After a tight win over the Seminoles Friday, the No. 7 Blue Devils are set up for a deciding match against the Tar Heels in their regular season finale.
(03/27/12 4:00am)
Last Saturday against then-No. 18 Georgetown, Duke won its fourth straight game. But in three of those games, the No. 8 Blue Devils (7-3) nearly coughed up large fourth-quarter leads before hanging on for the victory.

After three years as a Blue Devil, junior Mason Plumlee has decided to “test the waters” of the NBA draft and possibly skip his final year of college to pursue a career in the NBA. Both Draft Express and Chad Ford of ESPN rate Plumlee as the 29th-best prospect and project him to be drafted towards the end of the first round, should he choose to leave Duke.

Duke gave head coach John Danowski the best birthday gift a team can give for three quarters, and then nearly gave it away as Harvard staged a furious fourth-quarter rally.

BALTIMORE — With about 12 minutes to play in the third quarter, Duke trailed by three as it attempted to clear the ball from its defensive zone. Backup goaltender Mike Rock, who replaced ineffective starter Dan Wigrizer in the second period, mishandled a pass from a defenseman and allowed Loyola attacker Mike Sawyer to swoop in for the groundball. Sawyer immediately scored the easiest of his six goals on the day against an empty net.

Duke opened Saturday’s game against Notre Dame much like it opened overtime against the Fighting Irish in the 2010 championship game. Senior CJ Costabile took the opening faceoff and streaked into the offensive zone before firing off a quick shot. Unlike his title-clinching shot two years ago, though, this one did not find the back of the net.

Two years ago, then-senior Brian Zoubek emerged as one of the nation’s best offensive rebounders, carrying his team to a victory over Maryland with a 16-point, 17-rebound game. On Saturday, senior Miles Plumlee spurred this year’s Blue Devils to victory against the Terrapins with a breakout performance of his own.
