Editor's Note, 11/6

This past week, millions of people practiced their individual rights by heading to the polls to cast a vote. For me, this past week, I had the opportunity to perform with and be coached by Afro-Latin jazz pianist and composer Arturo O’Farrill as part of the jazz ensemble. Reflecting on both of these offered me the opportunity to draw parallels between voting and jazz music.

Music Review: Aquarius

(10/16/14 8:06am)

Anyone who has frequented Shooters in the past couple months is probably no stranger to “2 On,” Tinashé’s lead single from her debut album, Aquarius. Thankfully, though, that is the only song from this album that you will hear in your favorite nightclub. Throughout most of Aquarius, Tinashé stays true to her alternative R&B roots as she sings and harmonizes over the sublime accompaniment from a variety of producers, including herself, DJ Mustard and Detail.

Editor's Note, 10/2

(10/02/14 9:15am)

Last week, Thom Yorke released a new album on BitTorrent in an interesting attempt to change the music industry. When I went to the website to buy the album, I realized I could probably download it for free. I opted for the latter choice, realizing that I had previously done the same with much less successful artists, so it was only fair.

Music Review: NehruvianDOOM

(10/02/14 8:56am)

As disappointments go, NehruvianDOOM is one of the better ones. Although the collaboration between rappers Daniel Dumile (DOOM) and Bishop Nehru showed promise, heavy-handed lyrics and clichéd hooks take away from the framed awkwardness that are DOOM’s beats. While, at times, Nehru’s seriousness breeds an interesting effect over the quirky samples, it usually sounds vain and forced. This melodrama is to be expected, though, considering he is only eighteen.

Editor's Note, 8/28

(08/28/14 7:50am)

Audiences of solo piano performances from jazz masters have come to expect a degree of avant-garde extravagance. Last spring, I realized this while waiting for Chick Corea to perform his set in Baldwin auditorium. The concert promised to be part music, part performance art, and entirely self- indulgent.

Film Review: Insidious: Chapter 2

(09/19/13 9:30am)

"Insidious" follows the Lambert family, whose son, Dalton (Ty Simpkins), possesses the ability to separate from his body and walk in a spirit world called The Further. While in this state, other spirits can possess him. Dalton’s father, Josh (Patrick Wilson), also has this ability, and in the last movie he used it to retrieve his son from The Further. Unfortunately, while Dalton could return to his body, Josh’s was taken over by a bride in black who has haunted him since his childhood. In "Insidious: Chapter 2," the family uses the help of some ghost hunters to research the ghost of the bride in black, travel through The Further and retrieve Josh’s spirit after destroying the mother of the ghost that possessed Josh.
