Building a Social Life

Dancing on a Saturday night in the 1930s, a few short years after the creation of Duke University, a typical student could not be happier. He had a tough time drinking, because of Prohibition, so a great deal of student entertainment centered around activities that are tame by today's standards. School-sponsored dances, debate team and Bible class were particularly popular for students around the founding of the University.







Despite student interest, new WilRec closed for weekend

After teasing students and faculty with its state-of-the-art facilities and sprawling weight room, the Wilson Recreation Center closed its doors this weekend for minor renovations. A few signs posted on the athletic facility's doors were the only indication that the gym would not be open, and many uninformed students made the trek to the facility only to be turned away.


Cal Tech leapfrogs to U.S. News No. 1

The California Institute of Technology has become the best university in the country, or so says U.S. News and World Report magazine. According to the magazine's 2000 Guide to America's Best Colleges, which hit newsstands Monday, the school catapulted from a ninth-place ranking last year. Duke fell one place from last year and landed in a three-way tie for seventh place with Johns Hopkins University and the University of Pennsylvania.
