Men's basketball wins thriller

(02/29/96 5:00am)

COLLEGE PARK, Md.-In the final seconds of Wednesday night's 77-75 win at Cole Field House, the men's basketball team discovered the three main ingredients it has been missing the last two years. In one smooth motion, sophomore forward Ricky Price nailed a buzzer-beating, game-winning shot, lifted Duke above the .500 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference and sealed an NCAA Tournament bid, all of which have eluded the Blue Devils since 1994.

During the spring of 1994, the Duke community witnessed the graduation of Grant Hill, the last superstar from the Blue Devils' historic championship squads of the early '90s. The men's basketball team looked for a new leader to guide its return to the Final Four, and when a crop of new freshmen arrived on campus that fall, many eyes turned to Ricky Price. Price, however, looked to blaze his own trails.

Women's basketball outlasts Florida State

Over the last few years, the women's basketball team has become accustomed to playing ugly games at Florida State's Tully Gymnasium. Since the 1991-92 season, the Seminoles' first in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Blue Devils have lost three times and narrowly won once at Florida State. Duke's string of ugly contests in Tallahassee continued this weekend, but the heavily-favored Blue Devils finished the game with a 17-6 run to win 61-47.
