Upon further review: Duke-Maryland: The best rivalry... for now

In my three-and-a-half years at Duke, I've witnessed some major changes in the Duke basketball program. After my freshman year, Corey Maggette, Elton Brand and William Avery's departures for the NBA demonstrated that Duke was not immune to the early-exit bug. Last year, Duke once again became the king of college basketball with its 10-point victory over Arizona in the national championship, and soon after, coach Mike Krzyzewski was awarded basketball's highest honor--induction into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame.

LAHAINA, Hawaii -- After winning its ninth straight game and its third tournament title in as many tries, all the men's basketball team can say about the Maui Invitational is "Mahalo" (Hawaiian for "Thank you") especially because it did not fall prey to the upset bug that bit UCLA and Kansas the previous two days.

LAHAINA, Hawaii -- A trademark of Duke's championship teams over the years has been their ability to make free throws in the clutch to carry themselves to victory. Monday evening in the Lahaina Civic Center, the Blue Devils' free-throw shooting was a mere 55.6 percent, but All-American guard Jason Williams hit the big one when it counted most.


Odom guides South Carolina against familiar foe

LAHAINA, Hawaii -- South Carolina basketball coach Dave Odom, a former assistant coach for the No. 1-ranked Virginia team that was upset by Chaminade in 1982, will not have to worry about another dramatic loss to the NAIA school this time around. Odom's Gamecocks, in control throughout most of the contest, survived a late-game comeback to beat the Silverswords 74-61 in the opening game of the EA Sports Maui Invitational.
