Learning how to write sentences again

(04/18/22 4:05am)

Recently, I’ve been reflecting on how I choose to communicate—why I hold my tongue, or why I let it run. This past weekend, it occurred to me that there was no reason why I was holding onto a specific piece of information that’s caused me rage for three years. Thus, I took to Instagram and divulged the name of the student who, in my freshman year, attempted to assault me. That part of me was already stained, but this divulgence could help protect others from him. Once, I feared that Duke would strike back at me if I ever spoke publicly about it, because the university is notoriously terrible at handling sexual misconduct cases. However, this is an all-too-common tragedy that goes beyond this university—what happened to me could have happened to anyone, anywhere. When institutions fail to protect us (which is often), I’ve learned that sometimes, you have to rely on good people.

Vote in North Carolina

(03/03/20 5:00am)

If you’ve walked past WU at all in the past couple of days, you’ve probably noticed the picket signs emblazoned with candidates’ names, or the brightly-colored banners encouraging you to cast an early vote. Officially, North Carolina votes on Super Tuesday, along with thirteen other states. Due to the influence that states with earlier primaries and caucuses have on public opinion and polling across the country, this day has the potential to become a turning point for the rest of the election cycle.

We need to address the aftermath of sexual misconduct at Duke

(02/03/20 5:00am)

Given my easygoing lifestyle, I didn’t think that I’d ever personally face sexual misconduct. In December of my freshman year, I experienced a brutal wake-up call about the reality of sexual misconduct here at Duke. There was a situation with a fellow first-year who wanted to do something I didn’t want to do, but his intentions were clear.

When Shooters becomes a substitute for therapy

(12/06/19 5:00am)

To uninvolved onlookers, the troupes of students lining up by Shooters are there for a good time. In several ways, they inspire empowerment. The same, huddled students walking around campus in sweats and yoga pants by day now radiate confidence en masse, dressed in flattering clothing and encircled by seemingly supportive friends.

Why do most Asian students pursue 'practical' majors?

(11/22/19 5:00am)

In my first three semesters at Duke, I’ve changed my intended major more than anyone I know. I’ve floated around as any combination of English, Econ, Psychology, CompSci and IDM. Coming in as strongly-undecided but hopeful, I wanted to immerse myself into the humanities, but I knew that ultimately, because of complicated cultural and familial factors, I was going to settle into something practical. As a first-year, I tried to balance these motives by taking Personality Psychology and CompSci 101 in the same semester, Creative Writing and Econ 101 in the next.
