Making it B.I.G.

(01/27/09 9:00am)

Of the few things I can state with certainty, one is that the music of Notorious B.I.G. has educational merit. Even my high school English teacher once referenced Biggie in our class discussion of "The Great Gatsby," noting that the enticing prospect of moving from rags to riches that shapes Gatsby's life is demonstrated by this quality rhyme: "Birthdays were the worst days/ Now we sip champagne when we thirsty." With such in mind, I've been planning to see the new Biggie Smalls feature film, "Notorious," obviously for purely academic reasons.

A return to abnormalcy

(01/13/09 9:00am)

The oft-forgotten president Warren Gamaliel Harding once promised that there would be "return to normalcy" following his election in 1920, urging his fellow Americans to embrace life's familiar patterns after a period of unprecedented turbulence during World War I. Strangely, I found myself remembering Harding's words as I landed in Raleigh-Durham for the start of second semester freshman year. While the Great War and the first semester of one's freshman year bear few significant similarities, both represent a changed way of life, a journey into the unknown. After such journeys, it is only natural to expect life to again take on some semblance of normalcy. Thus, like our hopeful president of 89 years ago, I awaited a future far more predictable than the recent past.
