Just a month after the release of Apple's Acre, Portland's (from Idaho, by way of Chicago) Nurses are hitting up the Duke Coffeehouse as an early stop on their epically long tour (that includes a stop at Local 506 in November). Here's the full version of the interview with Nurses' vocalist/guitarist Aaron Chapman that ran in today's recess. Nurses, along with the Brunettes and Throw Me the Statue, are playing the Duke Coffeehouse this Saturday, Sept. 5. Tickets are $10 (free to Duke students). Doors are at 8:30 p.m. and the show starts at 9 p.m.

Looks like Bob Dyland didn't take our suggestion for his Christmas album's cover art. Vulture has the cover art Christmas in the Heart. In spite of the mildly humorous Russian man guiding the sleigh, it seems a little to Yankee Candle for the man behind Blood on the Tracks. We're already knocking it a star.

This year's Troika Music Festival just got a lot better and there are 15 reasons why. The lineup now includes 15 more bands, among them Megafaun, the Love Language, Red Collar, Pipe (!) and Butterflies. The schedule for this year's festival will be released later this week. Ticket sales for Durham's November 5-7 music festival will also begin later this week. Check back her for further updates and below for the new additions to Troika.

Duke's Ciompi Quartet performed in the Pegram Residence Hall on East Campus last night at 10 p.m. with President Richard H. Brodhead and his wife, Cindy, seated in the audience. The quartet is also gearing for a series of four, informal lunchtime concerts in the Rare Book Room in Perkins Library this year, the first of which is slated for Tuesday, Sept. 15.

A little late but nonetheless. Although more attention has been paid to Duke slipping to number 10 in U.S. News & World Report's rankings, GQ's September issue features its own brand of college rankings: America's 25 Douchiest Colleges. The magazine calls Duke the home of "The O.D. (Original Douche)" and adds, "They're probably number one. But we'd rather not rank Duke number one at anything." GQ also dubbed Duke as honorable mentions in the categories of "blue-blazer institution," "excessive-pride institutions," "show us your t---s institutions," "crazily expensive institutions," "kind bud institutions," "limousine liberal institutions" and "eating club institutions."

Brad Cook played with Megafaun and Bowerbirds at last night's show, earning the hard-worker award. And for "The Ticonderoga," Phil Cook joined Bowerbirds. Bowerbirds, who headlined, closed out their encore (and tour) with all of Megafaun joining them on-stage as they performed a cover of the Rosebuds' "Hold Hands and Fight," dedicated the Rosebuds' Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp, both in the audience.

Bowerbird's latest release Upper Air is an enchanting album. But the live experience at their homecoming show with Megafaun last night, which was a triumph. But the surprise, likely stemming from the fact that Phil Moore, Beth Tacular, Mark Paulson and Brad Cook just returned from an extensive tour promoting the album, was how familiar these songs felt. The songs from Hymns for a Dark Horse were as great as ever, but the one's from Upper Air, released July 7, felt like old favorites. Here's a sampling of two songs: one older and one newer.

Capping off an international tour alongside Bowerbirds, Megafaun returned home to North Carolina playing to a sold-out crowd at Carrboro's Arts Center. At Saturday's show, an especially amazing outstanding Megafaun delivered big time. Here's a clip of there first two songs, the old favorite "Beloved Binge" and, from their barely-month-old new release Gather, Form & Fly on Home Tapes, "The Process."

Duke's Office for Student Affairs has a new service called The Hub to facilitate greater involvement of Duke students in the Durham community. From The Hub's Facebook page, "The Hub is a discount ticket program that engages Duke students in the local community by offering opportunities to attend off-campus events and attractions at a deeply discounted rate."

When I attended orientation two years ago, I remember hearing "Soulja Boy" about as frequently as I saw people draining cheap beer. Last year, "Paper Planes" was the song of the summer. Who will we be hearing this year? I'm guessing a melange of that horrifying Black Eyed Peas song, that Mariah Carey song I've heard is big, maybe that song that presents a viable case for stripping Jamie Foxx of his Oscar and candidate for the most star-studded collaboration of all time: "Run This Town." Probably that brain-cell-killing Asher Roth song (cliche!) too.

As we learned earlier, Tooth will be playing the Duke Coffeehouse Friday, Sept. 11. Turns out, the show will be the metal band's last, and it will serve as a release party for the split 12-inch with Philadelphia's the Claw. The EP is the Claw's last recording before frontman Mikey Brosnan was killed in 2008.

As we reported Monday, music site Ear Farm was assembling a list of the Old North State's 10 bands you should be listening too. Respectable if, like any good list, a bit controversial, the Web site made readers wait two days--until today--to find out who topped the list. And the North Carolina band you should be listening to? As the title of this post reads, it's Lonnie Walker, who also earns the distinction of being Ear Farm's band of the week. Lonnie Walker is also appearing on the forthcoming Hear Here compilation.

(Via Music.MyNC.com) The Squirrel Nut Zippers, the Old Ceremony and many more are banding together to do a benefit show for Britt Harper Uzzell (a.k.a. Snuzz), a Winston-Salem-based musician currently undergoing treatment for lymphoma, as well as raise money for cancer awareness. Billed as Snuzzfest, the lineup includes Jeff Hart & the Ruins, the Jackets, and many more in addition to a reunions for both International Orange and Big Kids. Robert Sledge (formerly of Ben Folds Five) and Chuck Folds (of the Folds kin) are also slated to appear.

(Via Scan) The tracklist for the forthcoming Hear Here compilation album has been revealed and you can check it below. As mentioned before, HNMTF, Birds of Avalon, the Never and headliners Annuals (appearing as Sunfold on the album as, according to Scan, their Annuals-billed Johnny Cash cover didn't make the album due to licensing rights) will play the Cat's Cradle Saturday, Aug. 29. The $10 show includes a copy of the CD and will benefit Raleigh's the Visual Exchange.

More details concerning the release party for Midtown Dickens' new album Lantern. Opening the show will be Mount Moriah and Des Ark's Aimee Argote, doing a solo gig. The album, called a "multimedia package," contains a CD, vinyl, a download code for a digital copy as well as a 16-page collage/lyric booklet. And there's the possibility of a free liquid surprise with every copy of the album sold--it sounds like you should get there early.
