Peter Holsapple and Chris Stamey might be most famous for their work with the dB's, but the two old friends just released their second album as a duo, hERE aND nOW, their first since 1992's Maverick.

Amidst the rainbow flags and grey skies, anyone at North Carolina's annual Pride Festival might have missed it, but there was fame in the crowd, in the form of none other than Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart. The Durham-hating transplant wrote on his blog about the event:

In a lot of ways, Mission of Burma's latest LP reminds me of Superchunk's Leaves in the Gutter EP, released earlier this year. Although the Chapel Hill indie rock band has never seen an album reach quite the level of critical acclaim as the Boston band (and comparing Superchunk to a Matador release is mildly heretical), both bands are are storied. And on their third post-reunion album, Burma is doing exactly what Superchunk did earlier this year: churning out classic tracks and reminding us why we ever liked them in the first place.

The (Durham) Herald-Sun reported today that popular music venue (err, restaurant?) the Broad St. Cafe has been ordered to cease hosting music after 10 p.m. The story notes that neighbors have complained about the cafe, which they say is operating "illegally" as a night club. The Soulless Dogs' show there last week was cancelled because of the Sept. 21 order. From Ray Gronberg's story:

Kristine Stiles (full disclosure: I'm in her class) theorizes about the future of art, and many more arts faculty weigh in. Check out some art/culture-themed ones below.

Add another Chapel Hill band to the tally. That's right, the Love Language are joining Merge Record's roster. After touring with the Rosebuds and blowing up on the heels of the release of their debut LP, the band seems a nice fit for the king of local labels.

We've got lots of meat, and it doesn't taste cheap (mostly). We don't have Superchunk, but we do have Merge.

We tweeted this a couple weeks ago, but Piedmont is hosting a dance party at 10:30 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 2. But this isn't just Piedmont filling the George's late-night void. No. There's some musical oomph behind this event in the form of the event's disc jockey, known as DJ Blowing Rock. Who is that, you ask? None other than artist/Durham resident/Les Savy Fav's Harrison Haynes. Sure, it's fall break for Duke, but for anyone around, definitely check it out.

Quick bit: Bombadil released a Daytrotter set today and you can check it out here. The band played three tracks from their 2009 release Tarpits and Canyonlands and one from A Buzz, A Buzz.

In light of today's release of the Tucker Max-penned I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell movie (not a film--a movie), we're presenting a round-up of all the Max-related events since the Raleigh, N.C. premiere of the film. We're not suggesting you should give money to Max (Little Italy certainly doesn't want you to), but here's what we've got:

Back in 2005, the now-Duke famous Anthem (Anteneh Addisu) made it into the pages of the Chronicle (specifically, recess) for a show he and 10 other MCs played on Halloween at George's Garage.

Yesterday's explosion of Anthem's Blue Devil-themed hip-hop track "Dear Duke" sparked some interest as to who Atteneh Addisu. Turns out, some of his footing in rap came from his "dear" alma mater. In light of the 2007 Don Imus scandal, WRAL reported on Duke's hip-hop class with Robi Roberts. Here's what Addisu had to say:

This weekend, Carrboro (and Chapel Hill too) is playing host to Liminal Festival. Organized by Felix Obelix's Wendy Spitzer, the weekend-long festival is designed to unite musicians bridging gaps between genres and also to bring them to a wider audience. The event kicked off last night at Chapel Hill's Ronald McDonald House where Schooner's Reid Johnson played an outreach performance for patients and their families. Check out the rest of the schedule below and be sure to check out the festival too.

Following Asher Roth's general post-secondary hit "I Love College" and Mike Posner's general success comes Duke's very own hip-hop anthem from a mysterious Trinity '07 graduate by the name of Anthem. The track, titled "Dear Duke," mentions every part of undergraduate life at the Gothic wasteland wonderland from Campus Dr. to Shooters II to drinking on Duke's dry East Campus to Brodhead bobbing his head to Anthem's very own track on the Quad. Anthem also serves up some shout-outs to successful Duke grads like Dan Abrams, Reggie White and J.J. Redick (OK, not all of them are successful). Check out the track here.

Mike Kinsella could give Elliott Smith a run for his money. The middle Kinsella brother's four Owen albums are beautiful if terribly sad solo works, dwelling on relationship failures. They are the one-artist soundtrack for the broken hearted.
