Duke slips by Davidson in game of spurts

(11/23/04 5:00am)

Duke needed several big plays from co-captain Daniel Ewing down the stretch to secure a win of Davidson Monday night in the teams second game of the season. The Blue Devils, after trailing for a large potion of the first half, built a halftime lead and extended it after the break. Davidson, however, clawed back to test Duke down the stretch.  CHARLOTTE -- Daniel Ewing stole the ball from Davidson forward Logan Kosmalski at the top of the key with 5:02 left in the game and there was nothing but clear sailing between him and the basket. With the Wildcats in the middle of a 27-9 run that had sliced Duke's 20-point lead to just four over the course of 10 minutes, the senior captain knew what he had to do.

Bring it on

(11/19/04 5:00am)

Duke may be overshadowed by a host of ACC teams dominating the top five, but after a grueling preseason, No. 11 Duke is ready to begin its 100th season of Basketball. The Blue Devils take on Tennessee Martin in the season opener Saturday at 7 p.m., and Coach K finally gets a chance to see what his experienced but thin team brings to the court.

MARYLAND: Gilchrist guns for ACC respect

(11/05/04 5:00am)

It is not very often that a basketball team returns four starters and 11 letter-winners from an ACC Tournament title team. It is even less frequent for the tournament winner to beat the top three seeds to win the title. But when such a team is picked to finish anywhere from fourth to sixth in its own conference the next year, something truly crazy is going on.

Duke hangs tough but Cavs dash away with win

(10/25/04 4:00am)

Cedric Dargan’s leaping attempt to clear the goal line from one yard away on third down was stuffed by the Virginia defense. Undeterred, the junior running back landed on his feet and tried to sneak the ball past the goal line, but he came up just short. On fourth down, quarterback Mike Schneider’s throw to a wide-open Ronnie Elliott fell just short of the receiver.

No. 12 Gators chomp, Blue Devils 'choke'

(09/06/04 4:00am)

Midfielder Casey McCluskey looked to the sky and buried her face in her hands. Florida goalkeeper Brittni Goodwin had just ranged out of position as the ball had squirted free, landing right at the feet of the Duke senior. With a great chance to knot the game at 2-2 five minutes into the second half, McCluskey shot the ball high over the crossbar. Duke never really threatened again, as No. 12 Florida scored three more goals to win 5-1.
