12 absurd sports moments

(04/20/05 4:00am)

After four years as a sports reporter and two-and-a-half years as a columnist for The Chronicle, this will be my final sports column. Over that time span, I scoured the Internet, watched countless hours of ESPN and traveled everywhere from West Lafayette, Ind., to Albuquerque, N.M., in search of the best story possible. Based on my researching and reporting, I have compiled a list of the 12 most ridiculous moments in the sporting world over the past four years.

Team USA can return to top

(08/25/04 4:00am)

With a 3-2 record heading into the Olympic quarterfinals, there is no doubt that the 2004 U.S. basketball team has been at a low point—probably the lowest—in the American history of the event. Other countries have thus far been able to field superior teams, but American players are still the best in the world. For example, although Sarunas Jasikevicius torched America for 28 points in Lithuania’s 94-90 victory, he has yet to make an NBA roster despite trying out for nearly every team.

COMMENTARY - Krzyzewski's coaching translates well to pros

(07/21/04 4:00am)

When the Los Angeles Lakers hired Rudy Tomjanovich--shortly after Mike Krzyzewski turned down the same job--many analysts felt the Lakers were in a much better position than if Coach K accepted the job. Commentators took leaps in logic, claiming that because most college coaches achieve far less success in the professional game than in the NCAA, Coach K would not be able to make a positive transition to the far more ego-centric NBA. After all, nothing proves Tomjanovich's readiness for the job more than his two championships in Houston. How could the Lakers choose someone with no pro experience over a coach with two rings? But deeper analysis of Krzyzewski's strengths and weaknesses shows that he does not deserve the blanket criticism that all "college coaches fail in the professional game."

M.J. All-star by merit, not just name

(02/07/03 5:00am)

As I rummage together the $175 I have saved over the past seven weeks to buy the Air Jordan XVIII- discounted from last year's $200 model - that go on sale Saturday, it is pretty apparent that I still want to be like Mike even as his fortieth birthday is only ten days away. But after his third comeback to basketball, it seems that the rabid fans like me are becoming rarer and rarer, as critics of Jordan are finally having their day with his Airness apparently having joined the human race both on the basketball court and off.
