A different kind of homecoming

(10/15/04 4:00am)

Welcome home! Welcome home!” I have never had such a homecoming greeting as I received when I arrived in Israel one week after graduating from Duke last May. For my first 10 days in Israel, I was welcomed as a long-lost yet dear family member, a daughter finally reuniting with her relatives. I was greeted with singing and dancing, with chants of “Achim Achim Achim, Simcha Simcha Simcha” (Brothers Brothers Brothers, Happy Happy Happy). I was even invited by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon himself to move in and make my home in Israel.

Inside|Out Durham

(02/07/02 5:00am)

Any college student can relate to feelings of displacement--leaving home, entering a new environment and eventually calling that new place home. Three new installations at the Center for Documentary Studies tackle the obstacles of geographical and emotional displacement, but of much more extreme and life-altering kinds. Through photography, spatial art, collage and spoken and written word, the artists express what it is like to enter vastly different worlds with different languages, cultures and customs.

African Rhythms Rock

(01/24/02 5:00am)

giyabathanda labafana! Pardon my Zulu. That mouthful means "I love these guys," something I learned on the website for Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the popular all-male South African a capella ensemble. Even if you don't love these guys yet, you've at least heard them harmonize on the commercial for LifeSaaaavas. Or perhaps you've listened to Paul Simon's album Graceland. Yep, that's Ladysmith Black Mambazo singing with Garfunkel's better half.

Dynamite Diya

(11/09/01 5:00am)

Tonight in Page Auditorium, Diya--Duke's South Asian-American Student Association--will put on its annual cultural extravaganza: Awaaz, formerly known as Diwali. Earlier this week Recess arts associate editor Victoria Kaplan had the chance to talk with Diya's 2001 co-chairs, Jainey Bavishi and Namita Koppa, about the event.

Improv and A Capella

(10/26/01 4:00am)

Your parents want you to show them what Duke nightlife is all about, but, well, you'd rather keep them away from your Busch Light-stocked fridge. Thank goodness for improv and a capella. This weekend, nine of the most popular performance groups on campus will be serving up a healthy dose of wholesome family entertainment.

Big Apple Bounces Back

(10/19/01 4:00am)

had planned to spend fall break in the Big Apple long before Sept. 11. But when Midway Airlines (my carrier) went under two days later, thanks in large part to the terrorist attack's blow to the airline industry, I had the chance to rethink my trip. My friends and I decided that we would get tickets on another airline and go anyway. The show must go on, so they say.
