Akin's comments on rape reflected on campus

(09/03/12 7:42am)

While much of the country is in an uproar about Rep. Todd Akin’s recent distinction between “legitimate rape” and illegitimate rape, Rep. Akin’s illogical philosophy is one that unfortunately mirrors the minds of many students at Duke. During my years here, I cannot count how many times I heard students respond to a story about rape with the following remark, “Well was it real rape or just rape-rape?” This remark is akin to the ignorance expressed by Rep. Akin. This hyper-sensationalized and unmistakably sexist idea perpetuates the myth that the “stranger jumping out of the bushes” rape is the only form of “legitimate rape” and in any other scenario the female could have clearly stopped the rape or, in Akin’s mind, a resulting pregnancy.

Who needs feminism?

Identify yourself as a feminist today and many people will immediately assume you are a man-hating, bra-burning, whiny liberal. Perhaps a certain charming radio talk show host will label you as a “Feminazi” or “slut.” Even among more moderate crowds, feminism is still seen as too radical, too uncomfortable or simply unnecessary. Feminism is both misunderstood and denigrated regularly right here on Duke’s campus.

Call to act: reform the sexual misconduct policy

(04/05/12 9:44am)

As students have noted in multiple articles in The Chronicle, the Office of Student Conduct recently changed the time frame for students to report a sexual assault from two years to one year. We believe this change signifies an inexcusable failure on behalf of the OSC to truly understand the psychological damage that victims face and support victims of sexual assault in their healing.
