My closest childhood friend-since the second grade to be exact-finally came to Duke for a visit. It only took four years of incessant bothering. I called her at least once a semester solely reminding her of the plane ticket she needed to purchase; I also emphasized during our every shopping trip that a plane ticket to Durham is certainly superior to a new handbag or a fresh pair of jeans. I quickly pointed out that the purse she wanted to buy was ugly, and, conversely, visiting me would be a once-in-a-lifetime, beautiful, memory-making experience.

When Young Trustee results were announced in late February, my friends-both male and female-were shocked.

I think all "normal" students at Duke secretly, or openly, wish they were merit scholars, specifically Robertson Scholars. I fess up to my envy-they have it made.

Until last year when Duke Student Government and InterCommunity Council named Ben Abram, Trinity '07, Duke's newest Young Trustee, my impression of the post was overwhelmingly negative.

The approaching holiday season makes me sappy, so when choosing a column topic for this week-finals, Karl Rove, how the Republican debate on YouTube got me all riled up, Durham's water crisis, another column on leadership-my mind, you might say, filled with sugarplums and candy canes. Since Karl Rove is, alas, not a sugarplum or anything quite so pleasant, my focus drifted elsewhere.

Free food courtesy of quad council... RA programming event on internships... First panel discussion of the week, it has something to do with global health... Mandatory sorority fundraising event ($25 fine if you do not attend)... Second panel discussion of the week, it has something to do with gender at Duke... Musical act on the plaza and more free food... Third panel discussion of the week, it has something to do with "hooking up" (What?! People do that? I had NO idea)....

When I participated in Sigma Chi's Derby Days Lip Sync sophomore year, the venue was Shooters and the atmosphere felt more like a strip club than a friendly dance competition.

Core Four" sororities, the "Duke 500" and countless other social exaggerations were exposed in the June 2006 Rolling Stone article "Sex & Scandal at Duke."

In my last column I noted that Duke is an institution that primarily caters to America's top 5 percent. You might have asked-what, if anything, should the University do about this?

I remember when I got into Duke. My mom and I opened the package together, ecstatic to find that its contents brought good news. Yet just as the excitement subsided, the reality set in: With a $45,000-a-year price tag, how could we afford it?

When I arrived on campus four years ago, Duke was an unscathed academic and athletic paradise. The report of the 2002 Women's Initiative was the only evidence suggesting otherwise. The lacrosse controversy, ensuing intense media coverage and the Campus Culture Initiative were unexpected. Duke and the arriving Class of 2008 were both untainted.
