Genders re-seen

(02/18/16 7:22am)

Freshman year is novel and inimitable for various reasons. Students get to mold and shape themselves in tandem with new surroundings, selecting the people they mingle with and the subsequent values they hold closely as they learn, both academically and socially. This existential tabula rasa acts as a launch pad to everyone’s Duke University experience.

Music and Memory

The year was 2012, and the place was Beijing. The occasion was a Model United Nations conference; more specifically, it was the “Social Dance Night”. As my lanky, acne-riddled, fifteen-year old frame awkwardly waltzed onto the dance floor, I was greeted by a pool of gyrating bodies in positions far too salacious for me. This Shooters-esque scenery of hip rotation and grinding was accompanied by the most mainstream and “ratchet” tunes. There I was, a young high school student from an Indian, all-boys residential school nestled in the secluded foothills of the Himalayas, in the middle of this enlightening event. Swedish House Mafia’s “One (Know your Name)” started playing overhead. 15 year-old me smiled a toothy, wide, braces-filled grin as he absorbed this moment. Ever since that fateful weekend, whenever I’ve heard this song, a smirk of embarrassing proportions has formed on my face. It’s a song so replete with memories. There is a certain nostalgia in the notes.

'Adderall makes work fun'

(04/16/15 8:39am)

Students are getting desperate. It's hell week, when every class seems to have midterms, papers and projects that overlap. Circle the library at the ungodly hour of 4 a.m. and witness zombie-like students drag themselves through midterm and paper prep surrounded by empty Red Bull bottles. It's the kind of academic intensity one may expect at Duke, but living through it is a whole different ballgame.

Sylvan Esso entrances, enthralls at Carrboro concert

Many frown upon electronic music: most of the sounds are made with synths and a barrage of tuning options. Although the virtual nature of this genre affords an unparalleled degree of musical complexity, it seems to have resulted in a significant portion of electronically produced music sounding freakishly similar. The combination of a catchy beat and “drop," a big-label artist name and a sensual auto-tuned female vocalist is guaranteed to capture the charts. These songs come and go in tandem with the short-term memory that EDM listeners have. It’s a constantly recurring cycle that leaves many music fans pining for something fresh and unique.

The Renaissance of Vinyl

(04/02/15 10:19am)

In customary college gusto, I set off with a dozen friends to Asheville, North Carolina for spring break. Only a four-hour journey away, this uber hipster town turned out to be a universe away as far as the culture and atmosphere were concerned. The streets of downtown Asheville were riddled with coffee shops, bookshops, bars and boutiques selling t-shirts with ridiculous slogans at equally ridiculous prices. This culture of music, intellectuality and relaxation bore a stark contrast from many of the surrounding places.

The long road to nomination

(03/19/15 7:56am)

Every period of the semester tends to have go-to topics of small talk and discussion. A few of the evergreen ones include the unpredictable weather, the pressure of academics and, of course, social gossip. However, last month, an important subject was added to this list: the Oscar predictions. Every year, after a build-up to the Oscars—comprising of the People’s Choice Awards, The Golden Globes, Directors Guild Awards and the BAFTAs, among others—the world waits with baited breath as the cinematic community awards itself. Since so many awards have already been doled out by this time of the year, the Academy Awards rumor mill is always rife with names for every category.

Eyes Wide Shut

The current phase of India’s life is a turbulent one. She’s known for numerous things, and unfortunately some of these attributes aren’t positive: yes, India’s diverse culture and rich cuisine have gained much renown, but her uncontrollable population growth and corrupt government are the subjects of an equal amount of infamy. In this multitude of contrasts, there exists one all- eclipsing issue that plagues India today: gender inequality and sexual harassment. It’s seen in the shameful behavior women have to bear, and in the manic stares some of the men wear. Although the media covers sexual harassment and assault in thorough detail, it was only in the summer of this year that I personally witnessed the effect of this major social issue first hand.
