Don’t kick around Dick Nixon anymore

(02/23/17 4:59am)

Lately, I’ve been reading a slew of publications comparing Donald J. Trump to Richard M. Nixon. Journalists argue that Trump’s deep distrust of the press rivals that of America’s thirty-seventh President. In certain respects, these writers are justified in their observation. Richard Nixon was the first chief executive to create a White House communications team, a coalition ensuring that the press never ensnared the President during a vulnerable moment.

Divided we stand, united we rise

(11/16/16 8:00am)

It’s morning in America. Riots have erupted in urban streets following the election of Donald J. Trump to the highest office in the land—the President of the United States. Last week, Duke University was in a state of shock, reverberating with horror over the prospects of the next four years. It’s not easy to stomach what these prospects could mean for so many in our community—deporting undocumented cousins, barring thousands of a major faith from entering the country, outlawing abortion—and these are just potential consequences from Trump’s most oppressive social stances. Millions more of our loved ones could lose the affordable health insurance they have only gained access to under President Obama, and the economy risks spiraling into the fiscal abyss, a pit we found ourselves in merely eight years ago. But these are pent-up fears from the liberal bubble of Durham. Hillary Clinton won our county with 79 percent of the vote.

Decency in the 2016 election

(09/22/16 4:26am)

As of this week, the United States Presidential election is less than fifty days away. In July, Bill Maher voiced that this race is not about Democrat vs. Republican, nor insider vs. outsider; rather, it is a “referendum on decency,” an idea he repeated on his Sept. 16 show…spot on. With the 2016 election cycle lasting over a year and a half, it’s challenging to fully remember some of the events that have led to this election being such a referendum.
