Shaping our celebration of racial integration

I’m looking forward to the activities and programming that will note the 50th anniversary of the first black students at Duke. The Chronicle’s Nov. 27 report on the plans, “Duke will conduct a yearlong celebration to honor 50th anniversary of racial integration,” indicates that many have already dedicated time and talent to planning this “yearlong celebration.” However, one aspect of that news story leaves me with some strategic concerns.


Kunshan: Consult the experts

I appreciate Antonio Segalini’s recent column in the Opinion section “In bed with the wrong person,” as well as The Chronicle’s close attention to the series of unfortunate developments with regard to Duke’s initiative in China. What strikes me as particularly notable is that Duke’s faculty specialists (in Political Science and Asian and Middle Eastern Studies for example) could easily have warned administrators to anticipate issues like provincial competitiveness or political and business practices—had they been asked.


Producing difference

Our University's interest in minority and women students and faculty is to be commended. There is much we can do to develop a campus culture in which the historic exclusions and biases of race, sexuality and gender do not hold sway. Nevertheless, institutionally produced difference is not one of the ways to mitigate the effects of exclusionary habits of history.
