Campus group Mi Gente kicks off Latinx heritage month by celebrating the power of community

This year’s Latinx Heritage Month (LHM) celebration highlights El Poder de la Comunidad, or "the power of community" — a timely theme in the midst of political, racial, economic and health turmoil. To kick off the celebration on Sept. 18, three days after the official beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Mi Gente partnered with DukeCreate to host a virtual art class with keynote speaker and Duke alumna Dr. Lauren Czaplicki. 


DukeCreate self-portraiture workshop spotlights local artist Candy Carver

Midterm season is in full swing, and some students are in desperate need of a creative outlet. DukeCreate, a program that provides a series of free hands-on arts workshops, created another outlet for students with the “Self-Portraiture Using Watercolor and Oil Pastels” workshop on Sept. 16. Sponsored by the Office of the Vice Provost for the Arts (DukeArts) and University Center Activities and Events (UCAE), DukeCreate provided free art supplies to on-campus students and those living in the Durham area for this program. 



Pandemic fails to cancel 8th annual "Truth to Power" art exhibit

To the upbeat sound of Billy Porter’s “Love Yourself”, artists trickled into the now-familiar Zoom room. The inspiring feeling evoked by Porter’s lyrics as people joined the 8th annual “Truth To Power” exhibition artist talk harmonized with the messages encapsulated by the stellar artwork of the virtual gallery.
