According to Foals’ latest album, Yannis Philipakkis is a bad-habit, animal-like-you, cowboy with a broken crown. Foals have been known to create mathematical, precocious music. And yet, with Holy Fire, they have managed to be immediately accessible to their listeners without losing the intellectualism that has come to define them.


Strange Beauty film fest comes to Manbites

Starting today and running through Sunday, Manbites Dog Theater will host the Strange Beauty Film Festival. The festival will screen an array of diverse short films that vary from the Haiku-inspired Come, See the Real Flowers of this Painful World by Duke MFA student Shanshan Wong to the Sundance Film Festival-selected animation Belly by London-based Julia Potts. Strange Beauty is an event that continually aims to combine and exhibit local talent, experimental visuals, practiced cinematography and creative variation.


Piotr Anderszewski to perform through Duke Performances

Piotr Anderszewski, who will perform in Reynolds Industries Theater on Friday night, is considered one of the most atypical method actors in the classical music business. He takes on pieces that are not widely hailed, some of which, being performed Friday, are considered obscure even to connoisseurs of the genre. Friday’s performance brings to Duke an artist who may not be as familiar a name as last month’s Polish pianist Rafal Blechacz, but David Heid, lecturer in piano at Duke, assures that “[it will be] a wonderful evening of entertainment.”
