Men's swimming finishes 8th at ACC Championships

The men's swimming and diving team set three new school records in College Park, Md., over the weekend on its way to an eighth-place finish at the ACC Championship with a score of 88 points. Virginia, which replaced North Carolina as the dominant team in ACC swimming about four years ago, won all but two events on the way to a win with an unprecedented 872 points.



Swimming sets 7 school records at UNC's Nike Cup

The men's and women's swimming and diving teams had an impressive weekend in Chapel Hill, shattering seven school records at the NCAA Nike Cup Invitational Championship. Out of a field of eight teams, the women finished fifth with 370 points, while the men placed sixth with a score of 261 points. UNC won the meet on both sides, its women tallying 874 points to destroy second-place Virginia Tech (639 points), and its men winning an only slightly closer race over Louisiana State, 875-764.


Men's swimming defeats ODU, Towson State over weekend

After spending four-and-a-half hours on a bus to arrive at a facility that bears a remarkable resemblance to a dungeon, the men's swimming and diving team finally got to enjoy its first win of the season over the weekend. In fact, they liked it so much they decided to make it a double. The swimmers swept through Old Dominion and Towson State at a tri-meet in Norfolk Saturday, defeating the Monarchs by a score of 132-100 and crushing the Tigers 153-77.


Women win, men lose against UNC-Wilmington Sat.

It was a day of mixed emotions for the swimming team when it took to the water Saturday. Looking for its first win of the season against long-time rival UNC-Wilmington, the women's team came up with a big 142.5-100.5 victory. Things did not go so well for the men, however, as the Seahawks handily defeated them by a score of 150-91. The split improved the women's team record to 1-2, but dropped the men to 0-3. The competition was the first dual meet of the season for UNCW.



Fear the turtle: Swimming teams lose handily to Terps

The men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened their season against Maryland in College Park Saturday. The Blue Devils struggled in both sides of the meet against the Terrapins; the men were beaten by a score of 155-77 and the women lost 146-91. The losses drop both Duke teams to a record of 0-1, while the Maryland men improved to 1-2 and their women's team to 2-1.



Spoon, Samotyj swim strongly in summer nationals

Two members of the Duke swimming team had the opportunity to live the dream of thousands of young athletes across the country this past summer. Juniors Ryan Spoon and John Samotyj traveled to Fresno, California to swim in the Phillips 66 Summer National Championship, the fastest long-course meet held inside the United States. At stake were slots on the U.S. National Team at this year's Goodwill Games, to be held in Brisbane, Australia later this month.




Women's lacrosse survives cold, demolishes Davidson

There was a bitterly chill wind blowing at Koskinen Stadium last night, but not even the cold could slow the pace of the fourth-ranked women's lacrosse team. The Blue Devils (6-2, 1-1 in the ACC) ran circles around the visiting Davidson Wildcats (3-7) to outscore them 14-5. This is the third win in a row for Duke, after a pair of victories on the road over No. 2 Georgetown and No. 17 Johns Hopkins this past weekend.




Rowing narrows gap between it, Wisconsin

The Duke rowing team took part in the Tom White Invitational Spring Training Regatta in Oak Ridge, Tennessee Saturday, competing against Wisconsin and Louisville. Wisconsin swept the Blue Devils early in the day, winning all four races of the morning session. Duke fared better against Louisville in the afternoon, capturing all three races and posting a 1-2-3 finish in the Varsity 4 at the end of the day.


Swimming takes small strides at ACCs

The women's swimming team completed its season in good form, setting five new school records and numerous personal best times at the ACC Championship in Charlottesville, Va., this weekend. The University of North Carolina successfully defended its title, winning the meet for the second year in a row with 823 points. Host Virginia claimed second at the meet with its total of 639.5 points, while the Blue Devils scored 159 to place seventh.



Blue Devils drop matches against ACC rivals over weekend

The men's and women's swimming teams faced a tough weekend of competition in back-to-back duel meets against top-tier ACC opponents. On Saturday the swimmers traveled up to Charlottesville to take on Virginia's 11th-ranked men's team and 12th-ranked women's team. The Cavalier men swept the Blue Devils 162-118, their women by a score of 156.5-121.5. Following the meet, Duke returned home for a Sunday afternoon meet against No. 16 Maryland, which likewise swept the Blue Devils.
