Creepy Crawlers

(03/13/12 3:47am)

It’s a basic rule of biology that the cute and fuzzy critters get all the attention—just compare search results for “Duke lemur” and “Duke insect.” Towerview has been no exception, with our latest issue including one article about lemurs, one article about wild horses and zero articles about an animal with more than four legs. Well, now we’re going to give the not-so-fuzzy creatures their time in the spotlight. Some of them captivated our imagination, though others sent our photographer into a fit of terrified hysterics. Take a look at Science Drive’s most unusual animals…

The Recyclers

(12/02/11 10:00am)

In August, when thousands of Duke students moved into their residence halls, they brought with them a mountain of cardboard. Holding a few items of value between six flat sides and twelve straight edges, the individual boxes were soon emptied of their contents, flattened into various states of disarray and collected into a pile next to the warehouse at 117 South Buchanan Boulevard.

Face to Face with Merchants on Points

(10/25/11 8:00am)

Most interactions between Duke students and the Durham community do not last long. They are a string of brief and largely forgettable exchanges, such as thanking the bus driver, taking a cab to Shooters or ignoring the rambling attention of a homeless person on Ninth Street. Many conversations occur over the phone, through the Merchants on Points program. From dorm rooms or apartments (or, on some sorry occasions, the library), a student can call one of twenty local dining establishments and, fifteen minutes to two hours later, receive a meal.
