Column: Democrats must oppose Islamic dictatorships

(12/04/02 5:00am)

Overdue introspection by Democrats is sadly dominated by those who would sacrifice principles for power and those who would sacrifice both for ego. Too many "Democrats" mimic Republicans to win office (failing to wonder why voters wouldn't vote for the real thing) and too many "liberals" chase chic causes like bashing America and globalization or whitewashing Islamic fundamentalism for sheer narcissism.

Column: The importance of voting

(10/16/02 4:00am)

November's election is right around the corner, and it is worth noting at this point that our system of elections is one of the defining features of our country. All too often, our democracy is taken for granted, especially by the young, and it is therefore essential to call on college students, the leaders and citizens of tomorrow and thus those with the most long-term stake in this country, to go and participate in the vote.

Islamic fundamentalism: The only 'root cause' of Sept. 11

(09/11/02 4:00am)

There is no such thing as closure after 9/11, and there shouldn't be as long as Islamic fundamentalism threatens America. Those who say we should move beyond that event fail to grasp what happened. After going to school and working in New York for 12 years, I was extremely lucky that no one I knew lost their lives that day, although many close friends were not so fortunate.

Fighting for our souls and our ideals

(08/23/02 4:00am)

As Duke welcomes a new freshman class and new academic year, the first anniversary of a very black day looms ahead. It is easy to say that America's current war is for our survival and prosperity, but we are fighting for our ideals as much as we are for our physical well-being, so this war is not solely about bin Laden and al-Qaeda, but about whether the idea that succored them, radical Islamic fundamentalism, will destroy or be destroyed by American ideals. As an immigrant, I deeply appreciate the guiding principles of America that are often taken for granted:

Two sides of the coin on the subcontinent

(06/20/02 4:00am)

Many commentaries on the current face-off between India and Pakistan are predicated on the dishonest notion of moral equivalence between the antagonists. But naive attempts at balanced hand-wringing are both foolish and counterproductive. Morally equating India and Pakistan is as wrongheaded as equating self-defense with suicide bombing or President George W. Bush with Osama bin Laden. Chic evenhandedness may be the currency of relativism, but applying it to the real world is both repugnant and intellectually bankrupt.

Two milestone dates to end the year

(03/01/02 5:00am)

Dec. 13's suicide attack by Pakistan-backed terrorists on India's Parliament could eclipse the events of Sept. 11 as 2001's fulcrum moment. Ridding Afghanistan of terrorism requires clean-up next door, and as the hunt for Osama bin Laden centers on Afghanistan and Pakistan, American interests will intersect the historical context of the India-Pakistan conflict, continually festered in Kashmir.
