CHAPEL HILL -- 14 times a charm.
The men's basketball team certainly did not come out as sluggish last night as it did against the EA Sports All-Stars. However, it finished the game just as strongly as it did last week.
It certainly wasn't the prettiest game in basketball history, but for the men's basketball team it was a win nonetheless.
After a rough week on the road which saw the men's basketball team lose two ACC conference games for the first time in six years, the No. 3 Blue Devils (13-2, 4-2 in the ACC) returned to the friendly confines of Cameron Indoor Stadium and defeated the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (9-7, 2-3), 91-71.
After its victory over then No.6 Louisiana Tech, the women's basketball team prepares to embark on a weekend trip to Virginia and then Washington, D.C.
It probably was too much to ask for--a defeat of the No. 9 Wake Forest Demon Deacons (13-4-2) by a beleaguered Duke squad (8-10-1) in the opening round of the ACC men's soccer tournament at Historic Riggs Field in Clemson, S.C. Even with five starters out of the lineup, however, including the team's leading scorer and second-team All-ACC selection sophomore forward Jordan Cila, the Blue Devils tied the Demon Deacons 1-1, but then lost a heartbreaking shootout 3-1. The loss most likely ends Duke's season--an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament remains doubtful--and consequently the school's string of 23 consecutive winning seasons.
For the second time in under two weeks, the men's soccer team (8-10, 2-4 in the ACC) is set to face off against the No. 9 Wake Forest Demon Deacons (13-4-1, 3-2-1) Thursday at 3 p.m. This opening-round match of the ACC Tournament at Historic Riggs Field in Clemson, S.C., however, will have even higher stakes: another Blue Devil loss to Wake could very well end Duke's season, as well as the team's string of 23 consecutive seasons with a winning record.
When the Duke men's soccer team returns to Clemson, S.C., next weekend for the ACC tournament, it hopes the result will be quite different from yesterday's trip. Fielding a team ravaged by injuries, the unranked Blue Devils (8-10, 2-4 in the ACC) fell 4-0 to the No. 10 Clemson Tigers (13-4, 3-2) at Historic Riggs Field.
As has been the case throughout the season, the men's soccer team has another vital match ahead this weekend. Saturday at 7 p.m., the Blue Devils (8-8, 2-2 in the ACC) will square off against the No. 7 team in the nation, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (11-3-1, 2-1-1), at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem.
It was a disappointing weekend for the Duke men's soccer team. Not only did the team lose two hard-fought, one-goal games at home, but it also might have lost the heart of its defense for the rest of the season.
Despite last night's men's soccer match with Campbell being sandwiched between two conference games, the Blue Devils (7-5) did not overlook the Fighting Camels (2-8-1), defeating them 2-1 in overtime at the Eakes Athletic Complex in Buies Creek, N.C.
CHAPEL HILL -- The Duke men's soccer team expected a challenge Saturday evening as they drove the nine miles down to Fetzer Field at North Carolina. The team's expectations were more than met as the unranked Blue Devils (4-3, 1-1 in the ACC) fell to the No. 14 Tar Heels (6-2, 1-1) 1-0.
After a difficult week which included a hard fought victory at Radford University, the Duke men's soccer team returned to Durham with one goal in mind: upsetting 12th ranked Maryland. On Saturday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium, the Blue Devils (4-2, 1-0 in the ACC) accomplished their goal by blanking the Terrapins (3-3, 0-1) 1-0.
After an unexpected week off due to last Tuesday's terrorist attacks, the Duke men's soccer team (3-2) returned to action Wednesday afternoon at the Dedmon Center Field with a 2-0 victory against the Radford Highlanders (1-4). Although the team had not played a game for 10 days, as their match against Clemson set for last Friday was postponed, the Blue Devils gave a solid performance.
