Not a senior column

At first, I didn't want to write a senior column. I didn't want to cover issues of graduation and moving on. I didn't want to write about how much I've learned or all the great experiences I've had at Duke. It wasn't because I hadn't thought about it or didn't have anything to say. It wasn't because I didn't have any emotions. In fact, I had too many emotions and too much to say.

I don't have the chutzpah to predict a Duke victory tonight against Carolina. Last season, I watched as Tyler Hansbrough dominated the Blue Devils' top-recruit-turned-NBDL-journeyman Josh McRoberts in both contests. The year before, Hansbrough torched the national defensive player of the year at Senior Night in Cameron. How, then, can I pick a team without a true post defender to beat a team with arguably the nation's most effective power forward?




NOBELS WANTED

Just inside the door to George McLendon's office hangs the head of a moose. Not a real moose, but a trophy nonetheless. For the dean of the faculty of arts and sciences, the Bullwinkle-like visage is a constant reminder of his goals in the hiring and retention of faculty at Duke. Its message keeps him focused on the types of scholars he wishes to avoid.
