Black Keys

(12/08/11 11:00am)

The Black Keys have always been something of an oddity. They practice a very specific brand of blues-rock that feels more spiritually rooted in the original genre than contemporary music. They’re two white boys from Akron who have recorded album after album of thematically and sonically consistent material, but went so far as to collaborate with Mos Def and Raekwon.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds

(11/10/11 10:00am)

Liam and Noel Gallagher never exactly had a healthy working relationship. The brothers’ tenure as the leaders of Oasis was marked with infighting and drama; it’s tough to even believe that the band lasted as long as it did. Alas, Oasis and Noel Gallagher as we once knew them are both no more. Oasis is now Beady Eye, and the departed Noel has released his debut solo album under the moniker, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

Lou Reed & Metallica

Some things enjoyable on their own are more interesting when combined. Chocolate and peanut butter are each separately delicious, but their synthesis is even better. Musical collaborations can provide the same kind of delight: Watch the Throne, Jay-Z and Kanye West’s dual effort, is one of the best albums of the year. Lulu, a new release by Metallica and Lou Reed, is not. If Watch the Throne is a Reese’s peanut butter cup, Lulu is a chocolate-covered filet of salmon.
