U.S. should wage war on terrorist-harboring nations

(09/18/01 4:00am)

News flash to Duke's administration: America is at war. The greatest threat to us is not the "fragmentation" of the "Duke community," as the recent series of prayer vigils and forums on unity would suggest. The Pentagon has been attacked, New York City has been decimated and thousands have been murdered by Islamic terrorists. If America does not take proper action, it will happen again.

The slavery known as communism

(05/01/00 4:00am)

On Saturday, April 22, the Justice Department sent armed agents to break into Lazaro Gonzalez's home and seize six-year-old Elian Gonzalez. Members of the press and government officials declared almost unanimously that the government was acting in the best interests of the child, doing whatever it took to deliver him to his father. Nothing could be further from the truth.

John McCain: a moralistic marauder

(02/29/00 5:00am)

John McCain is not shy about expressing his moral vision for America. When he officially announced his candidacy, he said, "I run for president because I want the next generation of Americans to know the sense of pride and purpose of serving a cause greater than themselves." Recently, while speaking at the College of Charleston, he was even more explicit: "There is nothing more noble than to sacrifice and serve our country's cause, causes greater than our self-interest."

While the former maimed a superior figure skater, the latter group is on the verge of permanently crippling the world's wealthiest company. With U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Jackson's recent "finding of fact" identifying Microsoft as a monopoly that has harmed both competitors and consumers, a severe punishment is not far behind.

Evolutionism before creationism

(09/16/99 4:00am)

Imagine being a seventh grader in Kansas. Today, your teacher announces, the class is going to learn about how humans came to exist. This is exciting, and you say, "I've been wondering that for a long time." The teacher explains that how humans came to be is a mystery, but there are two competing theories you should consider. One, evolution by natural selection, is an integrated, logically coherent theory backed up by fossil evidence. The other, creationism, doesn't really have a lot of facts to support it, but she explains that a lot of religious people believe it on faith.
