Letter: Solving the semi-pro problem

letter to the editor

Regrettably, Duke is not a leader in finding a way out of the semi-pro sports team mentality, hosted by universities, funded by the networks and fans and exploitative of the athletes, that makes a mockery of the student-athlete ideal of long ago. A solution is clearly needed. Why not hire NBA candidates as Adjunct Professors, with a salary and a right to attend what classes they wish? I'm sure that idea is flawed but we need many ideas to move beyond the hypocrisy we all pretend isn't there when winning records are so impressive.
