Ask The Dirt - Duke Career Fair 2018 edition

Dear Dirt:  Uhhh, when is it?

Next week! Wednesday, September 26 - 10am-3pm - Wilson Gym.

Mobile-friendly guide right here.

Dear Dirt:  What do I WEAR?

So, I would go somewhere between a suit and business casual. What is business casual? I define it as something like a blazer, button down and dress pants or a dress skirt, but not necessarily the same color blazer and bottoms. Try to avoid anything too short or too tight.

Dear Dirt:  I’ve switched majors three times, what should I say?

It’s fine! It’s totally fine. It literally does not matter that much and pretty much any employer will not

want to see your full transcript, etc.

Dear Dirt:  How do I conduct myself like a normal human being?

This is a tough one! Try to have good posture, smile but not like a lunatic, say please and thank you, and don’t monopolize recruiters’ time too much. Do a handshake, I don’t really think it matters that much how strong you do it as long as you don’t do it like a well-to-do Victorian lady or a wrestler trying to prove your physical strength.

Dear Dirt:  How do I prepare, like, mentally?

A professor told me that a good way to prepare for any type of interview/employment situation is to come up with a 1-minute “elevator speech” about who you are, what you’ve done, what you can do and what you want to do. I don’t have any better advice than that. Practice it to a friend!

And Duke University Career Center is offering 2 brief sessions at the fair at 10am & 1pm for first-time goers! You can ask last minute questions and practice your pitch. More info is right here.

Dear Dirt:  I’m going into the fashion industry, should I bother going?

Yes, this is your chance to get some good experience talking to employers in a pretty low-pressure way. The main industries being represented are business, tech and education. It looks like Abercrombie and Fitch and Gap will be there; you can find the full list of companies and more info here.
