Freshman guard Sierra Calhoun has decided to leave the Blue Devil program, the team announced Sunday, intending to transfer to another Division I program. Calhoun will not play in Sunday's ACC opener against Wake Forest.

The Brooklyn, N.Y., native had started all 13 nonconference contests for the Blue Devils as one of the team's primary ball-handlers. Calhoun was averaging 10.1 points and 1.4 assists per game.

"We appreciate Sierra very much and wish her the very best," Duke head coach Joanne P. McCallie said in a press release.

The Blue Devils entered the season thin at the guard position, and Calhoun's departure stretches the backcourt even more. Just three scholarship players—senior Ka'lia Johnson, redshirt freshman Rebecca Greenwell and junior Mercedes Riggs—remain, and will likely log heavy minutes for the rest of the season.

"You'll be seeing more of everybody. It's just that time of year," McCallie said. "Mercedes, Erin Mathias, some things of that nature. We'll grow our bench as we go."

Calhoun is the third Blue Devil to transfer in the past three seasons. Sierra Moore left Durham for Penn State after her freshman season, and Alexis Jones transferred to Baylor after her sophomore campaign.

"It's definitely tough losing a player," Williams said. "Sierra's great, we love her. I think it was just important for us, the seniors, to make sure that the team focuses on each other and what we have with us today."
