Halftime Report: Duke 41, Army 28

Army has made the Blue Devils work for their baskets, but No. 4 Duke still holds a 13-point lead at the break.

The Blue Devils lead the Black Knights 41-21 after 20 minutes of play at Cameron Indoor Stadium, keyed by the play of freshman point guard Tyus Jones. The Apple Valley, Minn., native has 13 points and three assists, including terrific finds to classmate Jahlil Okafor and captain Quinn Cook in transition.

More so than in its other games, Duke has had to expend more effort on the offensive end to find a quality shot, running time off the shot clock. On one such possession, a 3-pointer by Jones on a broken play ignited a quick 7-0 Duke spurt to push the lead to double-digits for the first time. Kyle Wilson ended the mini-run with a triple of his own after shaking off Rasheed Sulaimon, but the Blue Devils countered by scoring the next six to force an Army timeout with Duke ahead, 27-14.

A 5-0 Army run late in the first half brought the Black Knights back within nine and forced a rare timeout from Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Observations from the first half:

  • Tyus Jones got in the scoring column early with a floater to make it 4-0 after not scoring in Duke's last two contests.
  • Winslow picked up charges on back-to-back possessions in the first 2:10 of the contest and was sent to the bench saddled with the two fouls. The Houston native did not re-enter until the 8:35 mark, and was whistled for his third personal on a 3-point attempt by Wilson with 6:20 left, returning Winslow to the sideline for the rest of the half.
  • Duke has pressured in the full-court as it has all season, but the Black Knights have applied some token pressure as well. It hasn't bothered the Blue Devil ball-handlers so far, although Duke does have six turnovers through the first 20 minutes of action.
  • Army entered the game with one of the nation's fastest-paced offenses, but has been bogged down so far by the bigger, more athletic Blue Devils. At intermission, the Black Knights are shooting 11-of-27 and have just two points in transition.
  • Wilson leads all scorers with 17 points for Army.
