HALFTIME: Duke 55, Gardner-Webb 39

The No. 8 Blue Devils managed 53 points in the first half and shot a lower percentage than Gardner-Webb despite shooting 58.8 percent from the floor and 43.8 percent from beyond the arc. Duke’s defense was able to force six turnovers while committing merely three in the half. The Blue Devils had four players score in double figures, led by 12 points from Jabari Parker, and the Runnin' Bulldogs' Jerome Hill was the sole Gardner-Webb player with 15 points.

  • Andre Dawkins and Quinn Cook were the sparkplugs for the Blue Devils with Dawkins first missed shot coming with 4:03 in the first half. The pair stretched Duke’s early narrow lead with Dawkins’ three-point shooting and Cook’s ability to make plays in transition.
  • Dawkins had a hot start, hitting his first four shots including three from beyond the arc, but failed to convert on his next three attempts.
  • Head coach Mike Krzyzewski substituted Marshall Plumlee in early in the first period before Amile Jefferson and used a 10-man lineup throughout the half mixing the starters with Plumlee, Jefferson, Dawkins, Rasheed Sulaimon and Matt Jones.
  • Sulaimon continued his scoring troubles and was blocked on his first attempt from the floor in the game, a 3-pointer from the corner.
  • Jabari Parker was quiet but efficient scoring the ball and was the beneficiary of a Cook lob slamming home an alley-oop with 5:21 left in the half that put Duke up 46-25.
  • Duke’s defense failed to contest multiple open shots for the Runnin’ Bulldogs allowing Gardner-Webb to shoot 62.5 percent from the floor and 50 percent from beyond the arc
  • Duke’s offensive load was shared between the trio of Parker, Cook, and Dawkins primarily. Rodney Hood had a quiet half with 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor.
  • The Blue Devils rebounded the ball well, holding a 16-7 advantage. The Blue Devils were efficient on offense in part due to the combination of rebound and 14 assists.
