Duke falters against powerful Hurricane attack


Pass: B-

Sean Renfree followed up a poor showing last week with a more consistent game against Miami, throwing for 181 yards with 19 completions on 25 passes. Renfree engineered scoring drives to keep Duke within 14 points twice, capping the first with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Conner Vernon. Renfree threw one interception, and Donovan Varner led Duke receivers with four receptions for 54 yards including a 30-yard reception. Anthony Boone continued to struggle, completing just three passes on seven attempts for 13 yards.

Rush: B-

Desmond Scott added another solid game rushing for 52 yards on 12 carries.  However, Duke could not sustain a strong rushing attack against a stout Miami defense. Anthony Boone rushed for 32 yards on eight carries, improving on poor showings in previous weeks.

X and O’s:

Duke struggled on third down, converting on only 6-of-14 attempts. Duke also failed to generate big plays, averaging 5.3 yards per play compared to Miami’s 7.8.


Pass: C

Jacoby Harris threw for 202 yards on 14 attempts and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Duke failed to force an interception or record a sack

Rush: D+

Miami’s rushing attack dominated Duke. The Blue Devils gave up 266 yards on the ground to Miami with Lamar Miller gaining 147 yards on 20 attempts. Miami also averaged 6.8 yards per rushing play, and Duke failed to force any fumbles.

X and O’s:

Duke just couldn’t stop Miami’s balanced attack, giving up 24 first downs and only stopping Miami three times on third down. Duke continued to give up big plays, as Mike James pulled in both a 36 yard reception and a 32 yard rush.

Special Teams: C+

Neither teams attempted any field goals, and Duke's Alex King averaged a mediocre 36.7 yards per punt. Duke contained Miami’s return attack, giving up just 36 yards, while Duke’s return game was more successful with 154 yards off of nine returns.
