295 employees accept early retirement

Out of the 825 bi-weekly employees offered early retirement incentives by the University, 295 have accepted, said Michael Schoenfeld, vice president for public affairs and government relations.

The University exceeded its initial target of 200 acceptances by nearly 50 percent, Schoenfeld noted. Most of the employees who took the retirement incentives will leave Duke by Aug. 31.

The University is currently developing a similar retirement package that it will offer to salaried workers who meet Duke's requirements to retire. Schoenfeld said the details of that program will be made available by the end of August.

The retirement incentives are steps the University is taking to cut its human resources expenses as part of its overall effort to cut $50 million from its budget this year. Schoenfeld said he was unsure if layoffs would occur in the future, but administrators have previously stated that they cannot be ruled out.
