Students found with marijuana

Officers responded to a report of trash being thrown off a balcony at the Central Campus apartments on Pace Street at 2:15 a.m. Nov. 13. When officers arrived they spoke to residents of an apartment, who told The Chronicle that the trash that was thrown had originated from the apartment. While speaking to the residents, officers also noticed a strong odor of marijuana in the apartment. Further investigation led to sophomore Casey Rubin (born May 14, 1984, 1700 Pace St. Apt. K) and junior Daniel Mangiapani (born Aug. 27, 1984, 1700 Pace St., Apt. K) being cited for simple possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Their court date is set for Jan. 7, 2005.

 

Football fan damages car, taunts visitors

At 4:42 p.m. Nov. 13 a visitor reported damage to his vehicle, parked in the Circuit Drive area. The visitor reported that as he and his companions were returning from the football game, he noticed a white male in his 30s, about six feet tall, 225 pounds with short brown hair standing next to their vehicle. The victims noticed that the suspect had broken their Duke flag off the vehicle and was taunting them to come get it. The victims also noticed a large dent on the left side rear door of their 1992 Chevrolet Lumina. The damage is estimated at $500. The suspects left the area in a brown van with South Carolina license plates.

 

Cell phone nabbed

A student reported the theft of her Nokia cellular phone, charger and case from the Bryan Center Nov. 12. The student said she was charging her phone in the Bryan Center between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Nov. 11. When she returned to retrieve her phone it was missing. The stolen phone and accessories are valued at $160.

Car radio stolen

A visitor reported Nov. 13 a break-in to her vehicle, parked in the visitor lot near Whitford Drive. The victim said she parked her 1997 Honda Civic in the lot at 1 p.m. Nov. 13. When she returned to the vehicle at 4:15 p.m. the same day she found the door unlocked and the Sony car radio stolen. The stolen radio is valued at $300.

 

Diner tables hurled over balcony

A security officer noticed an unknown white male throw an aluminum table off the balcony at Rick’s Diner at 8:30 p.m. Nov. 13. Officers responding to the area found two other tables had also been thrown off the same balcony. Damage to the tables is estimated at $150 each.

 

Vending machine vandalized

At 12:30 p.m. Nov. 14 a student reported damage to a vending machine in Edens 2C. The student said she found the vending machine in room 114 of Edens 2C with the glass front smashed. The vending machine was last seen intact at 9:30 p.m. Nov. 13. It is unknown if anything was taken from the machine. Damage to the machine is estimated at $200.

 

Cash purloined

An employee reported Nov. 12 the theft of $300 in cash from a deposit envelope in the Eye Center. The employee said the money was removed from the envelope sometime between 5 p.m. Nov. 11 and 10:30 a.m. Nov. 12.

 

Money stolen from valet-parked car

A visitor reported Nov. 11 that $15 had been taken from her car. The victim left her car with valet parking at the front of the Duke Clinic Building at 8:45 a.m. She reclaimed the car at 1 p.m. and noticed the money was missing. There was no sign of forced entry to the car.

 

Stereo stolen in break-in

An employee reported Nov. 11 that his car had been broken into and his stereo stolen. The employee parked his car in the parking lot of the Washington Duke Inn at 5:30 p.m. He returned to it at 7:30 p.m. and found the vent window broken and the stereo gone. The stereo was valued at $300 and the damage to the car was $125.

 

Car vandalized, radio stolen

A visitor reported Nov. 11 that his car had been broken into and his stereo stolen while parked outside Uncle Harry’s on Central Campus. The incident took place between 4:20 p.m. and 8 p.m. Nov. 11. There was no sign of forced entry to the car. The stereo was valued at $150.
