Davidson upsets men's soccer

The last time Davidson (6-2-2) beat Duke in men's soccer, the original George Bush was President and there were kegs on West Campus. It took thirteen years, but the Blue Devils (2-7-1) were finally defeated by Davidson 2-0 Wednesday night at Richardson Stadium in Davidson, NC. The loss constitutes the latest of the struggles for Duke, as the team has now lost four games in a row and seven of their last eight contests.

Once again, the young Wildcats were the key to Davidson's victory, as all the points in the game were tallied by freshmen or sophomores. Three of the top four scorers for Davidson this season are freshmen or sophomores.

Duke started the game strongly, creating the majority of the scoring chances. The first half saw the Blue Devils outshoot Davidson and earn more corners. However, the Wildcat's much-heralded defense once again stood strong and did not allow Duke to score.

In the second half, Davidson seized the momentum with a long pass from Nahum Navas to freshman Robbie Reynolds, who notched the first goal of the game at the 52-minute mark. The Wildcats then took control of the game, allowing the Devils only two shots in the second half, compared to four in the first half. Davidson dominated the possession in the second half, as Duke struggled to earn a game-tying goal. The Wildcats added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute, as freshman Mac Wilkie scored on an assist from Jeff Davis.

The schedule eases up for the Blue Devils as the next four games come at the friendly confines of Koskinen Stadium, starting with Northwestern Sunday.
