He's anti-civil rights, pro-tobacco, anti-abortion, pro-bible. As Jesse now relinquishes his Congressional seat--which has no doubt molded to his contour since 1973--Recess couldn't help reflecting on some of his most memorable quotations of the last 30 years.

Helms on measurement: "If God had wanted us to use the metric system, Jesus would have had 10 apostles."

Helms on socialism: "If we had some ham, we could have some ham and eggs, if we had some eggs."

Helms on bipartisanship: "Mr. Clinton better watch out if he comes down here. He'd better have a bodyguard."

Helms on heart surgery: "It's no piece of cake, but it sure beats listening to Ted Kennedy on the Senate floor."

Helms on compromise: "Compromise, hell! That's what has happened to us all down the line--and that's the very cause of our woes."

Helms on the Boy Scouts of America: "The organized lesbians and homosexuals in this country of ours."

Helms on the 1964 Civil Rights Act: "The most dangerous legislation ever introduced in Congress."

Helms on supporting AIDS research: "It's revolting conduct."

Helms on not seeking re-election: "But I am, by no means, announcing my retirement. A great deal of work lies ahead."
