High bond set for man charged in assault case

Bond for the man charged with the violent assault of two University students last weekend has been set at $500,000.

Markey Wilson, of 417 Lakeland Street, was arrested and charged late Tuesday with one count of first-degree rape, two counts of first-degree kidnapping and three counts of armed robbery.

Corporal Fran Borden, spokesman for the Durham Police department, said that although police are unsure of Wilson's age, he is at least 16 years old and will be tried in court as an adult, according to North Carolina law.

Borden said Wilson has a prior-arrest record and has used several different aliases and dates of birth that have placed him anywhere from 16 to 26.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is expected to submit Wilson's record sometime in the next two weeks, which will include his true age.

Borden said the $500,000 bond was not unreasonable for a man as dangerous as Wilson.

"We are currently working on some other scenarios where he might be involved," Borden said. "If he gets out of jail, what does he have to lose? There's no telling what he could do."

Wilson was arrested following a brief car chase that ended in a three-car accident at the intersection of Umstead and Fayetteville Streets. No one was injured in the collision.

At the scene of the accident, a .357 Magnum and a bag of marijuana were found in Wilson's blue Chevrolet Malibu. He has also been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Police are currently searching for the second suspect in these crimes, who is reported to be a 15-year-old black man. Because he is a juvenile, no other information can be released about him, Borden said.

Borden said that the community has provided some assistance in hunting down the suspects and that the Durham Police department has received numerous phone calls from Durham citizens. "The entire community is outraged," he said.

Borden said that Wilson has been known to associate with a loose knit group of men from his neighborhood, but ruled out any gang behavior in the crime.

The assault began at about 2 a.m. Saturday, when the two victims were threatened at gunpoint by two assailants. The victims had been walking out of their car, which was parked in the Georgetown Manor apartment complex, located four blocks from East Campus.

During the next several hours, the kidnappers beat the male student and raped the female student twice. After leaving the male student for dead in a remote area outside city limits, the kidnappers drove the woman to a local Central Carolina Bank, forced her to withdraw $300 from an automatic teller machine and fled in the students' car.

The students were both treated at Duke Hospital over the weekend. The woman was treated and released on Saturday. The man was admitted on Saturday and was released in good condition on Tuesday, according to officials at the Hospital.
