Williams named MVP at football awards banquet

Senior offensive tackle Matt Williams was named the most valuable player of the 1993 Duke football team, head coach Barry Wilson announced at the team's annual awards banquet held Thursday night at the Durham Hilton.

Williams anchored an offensive line unit which allowed just 21 sacks in 478 passing attempts and totaled over 4,100 yards of offense. He becomes the first line member since Billy Bryan to earn the school's top honor.

Other award recipients included Scott Youmans being named most inspirational, Travis Pearson winning the Trinity Award for general excellence and Carlos Bagley winning the Mike Suglia Award for top sophomore scholar.

The evening was capped by a speech from each of the four captains and a video salute to the 1993 season. Wilson completed the evening with a farewell to the program he led over the past four years.

Other awards included : Dan Clark - Ace Parker Award, Brad Sherrod - Outstanding Linebacker, Scott Youmans - Outstanding Defensive Lineman, Tee Edwards - Outstanding Defensive Back, Jeroen Egge - Outstanding Offensive Lineman, Stanley Dorsey - Outstanding Receiver.
