(09/13/24 7:26pm)

With fall sports thoroughly underway, The Chronicle is polling its readers every week via its Sportswrap newsletter to highlight one Blue Devil athlete’s outstanding performance. The inaugural spotlight goes to Duke women’s soccer’s Maggie Graham:

Drag science and the slaying of nerd aesthetic

(09/14/24 12:00pm)

The past decade has seen a surge of global collaborations between science and fashion. We’ve seen the rise of online stores selling science clothes ranging from quirky to couture, such as MySciGear’s seemingly infinite selection of quality nerd puns and Svaha’s specific emphasis on breaking gender stereotypes in STEM through their clothing. Science-inspired clothing has made its way to high fashion, like with Dr. Yuly Fuentes-Medel’s 2014 collaboration Descience, which fostered collaborations with scientists and fashion designers to bring “research to the runway.” Within its Media Labs and in collaboration with the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), MIT has been a pioneer in developing sustainable and high-tech methods for textile production such as 3D-printed fabrics. And just this past May, the Museum of Science in Boston celebrated its own sustainable fashion show.

No. 8 Duke women's soccer demolishes Missouri 7-0 to extend winning streak

(09/13/24 2:21pm)

As sophomore Mia Minestrella stepped back to take a penalty kick for Duke in the closing minutes against Missouri, the Blue Devils already had the victory well within grasp. Minestrella herself had already scored a goal earlier in the 40th minute of the game. Scoring would do nothing but add another tally onto her team's scoring streak and make Minestrella the first Duke player to score more than one goal in a game this season.

The new social contract that permeates Duke student life

(09/13/24 2:15pm)

An eye-opening New York Times article, written by a professor at neighboring UNC-Chapel Hill, Dr. Rita Koganzon, caught my attention last week. It describes how universities are increasingly extending a mix of carrots and sticks to control more aspects of student life. She explains that as part of the ever-expansive “facilitator model” that has taken hold, universities have reinstated control over student life, in which “It’s not that students don’t have rights; it’s just that safety comes first.” According to her, as universities began to expand and supersede a fixed definition of  “safety,” they extended carrots — “relative generosity to their students” — to legitimize their enlarged presence.

In its first meeting of the academic year, Arts & Sciences Council revealed that only five proposals had been submitted for first-year Constellations one day before the submission deadline, falling short of its goal of 20 to 25 proposals.

Duke Puppy Kindergarten to close at end of grant cycle, transition to student-led club

(09/12/24 5:50am)

Beginning in 2019, puppies with yellow vests could be spotted on walks around campus or gathered together for play time with students. As part of Duke Puppy Kindergarten, dozens of dogs were socialized around campus and taken care of by students during their first months of life.

Chronquiry: How can students access health care on campus?

(09/11/24 3:17am)

As the fabled first-year flu makes its yearly rounds on campus, many students turn to Student Health for medical care. While primarily marketed as a clinic, Student Health offers a wide range of services that students can take advantage of.
