The race begins!
Coming back from winter break for Duke’s 100th year, our gothic wonderland didn’t look much different than before, save for slightly fewer orange cones. One would think that after all the money and time Duke poured into tearing apart and reconstructing campus, we would at least have solved the issue of the small pond that forms in front of WU and Kilgo when it rains — alas. However, one positive has emerged from the rubble: It’s Thyme finally replaced Panda Express.
It was an exciting start of the season for Duke, as the team won its first match against a competitive VCU team Saturday. The Blue Devils managed to pull through 4-3 after junior Jake Krug won the tie-breaking game in a crucial third set, coming back after losing the first set 6-0, despite the retirement of star sophomore Pedro Rodenas.
Coming off a painful loss at home to Pittsburgh, Duke men’s basketball will look to get back in the win column on the road against Louisville. The Blue Zone brings your three keys to a Blue Devil victory:
After each Duke men’s basketball game this season, check back here for the Player of the Game and more. The Blue Devils dropped a back-and-forth contest against Pittsburgh Saturday evening 80-76, and the Blue Zone is here to break down the game:
RALEIGH—On a fast break midway through the third quarter, an Oluchi Okananwa pass for Duke was picked out of its path by Saniya Rivers, who dished it down the floor to Zoe Brooks for an easy layup with no Blue Devil within 10 feet. A sold-out crowd at Reynolds Coliseum clamored to their feet, with chants reaching levels similar to those inside Cameron Indoor Stadium.
With just over a minute left to play, freshman guard Jared McCain knifed through the defense and snuck in a layup, bringing Duke back within one and firing up the home crowd. Suddenly, after an entire game of exchanging haymakers with Pittsburgh, the Blue Devils were finally ready to seize the victory.
Records are unbreakable — at least, until someone breaks them. On Sunday evening, Tara VanDerveer broke perhaps the most impressive one college basketball has on offer.
In the span of just 11 days, Duke and Pittsburgh played two completely different games.
Riding an eight-game win streak but down two key starters, No. 7 Duke returned to Cameron Indoor Stadium after a week of rest for a rematch with Pittsburgh Saturday night. Heading into the locker room, the Blue Devils trail the Panthers 38-34:
The rollercoaster of Duke’s season took another dip downwards Friday evening.
No. 7 Duke takes on Pittsburgh at home Saturday to continue conference play. Ahead of the contest, the Blue Zone delivers a few can’t-miss prop bets:
It was 8-0 with six minutes left in the first quarter. Duke played an incredible defensive possession, forcing Virginia Tech guard Cayla King into a remarkably difficult one-legged jumpshot. But as elite shooters do, she hit a miraculous triple, increasing the Hokie lead to 11-0.
Less than two weeks after taking down the Panthers in Pittsburgh, the Blue Devils will look to repeat their victory at home Saturday. The Blue Zone brings you a key player from each side:
As campus conversations begin to spiral about finding the right summer internship, I can’t help but think about my time last summer at DukeEngage’s Democracy at Risk program. Upon arriving in D.C., I had my work cut out for me. Our program’s goal of helping fix American democracy was lofty, and on top of that, I would be working for the “other side.” This Republican organization was committed to defeating Donald Trump in 2024, even if it meant turning against the majority of the Republican Party. Yet as I embarked on my internship at Longwell Partners, where I would devote hours a day filming testimonials with two-time Trump voters regarding their decision to move on from the indicted, impeached and immoral former president for the 2024 election, I often found myself wondering: how did our country get here?
Academic Council heard presentations on Duke’s finances, the renewal of University facilities and an annual report from the Office of the Ombuds at its Thursday meeting.
Duke’s Center for Muslim Life hosted an educational workshop for students, faculty and staff Thursday to increase awareness of the impact of Islamophobia and the diversity of the Muslim community at Duke and across the country.
