I received many reactions from a letter to the editor I wrote two weeks ago about Duke Student Government, and specifically two direct messages: one from current DSG President Keizra Mecklai and executive vice president candidate John Turanchik.

Duke frequently commends itself on its commitment to alternative transportation, but in between new parking decks and freshly paved roads, conditions for bicycle commuters remain unsafe.

Duke Student Government is an insular and selective campus organization that brands itself with quarter zips, armies of senators, shiny ideas and initiatives that look great on Linkedin and in photographs (bike-share anyone?). Meanwhile, the “News” section on their website that has not been updated since last winter. Working on Sophomore Class Council, I have seen many of the realities of campus programming: Take this lump sum of money (enough to purchase two small homes in Michigan). Go improve the “Sophomore Year Experience.” Let me be blunt.

I was surprised to read today's article on Vice President and University Secretary Richard Riddell's guidance for the Young Trustee candidates. I understand Vice President Riddell’s point that the Young Trustee’s role is different from that of DSG president.
