To The Editor: I was surprised and dismayed to learn from a 4/20/16 op-ed in the Chronicle that formal misconduct proceedings have commenced for the nine students who occupied Allen Building for several days in early April.
To the Editor: Some of you may have seen an alarming article published in today's Chronicle (April 18, 2016), stating that the Duke Lemur Center (DLC) has lost its funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF). I write now to assure you that the article has unintentionally created a wrong impression.
This piece adds another important voice to the chorus of voices across higher education in the United States reflecting critically on the civic engagement movement and on the strengths and challenges of DukeEngage and programs like it.
I am responding to "fari nzinga's" absolutely appalling 7 April editorial. In particular, I was horrified by their comments regarding the Duke lacrosse allegations of 2006.

As I have watched the coverage of the sit-in at Allen, I can’t help but notice the links between the student outrage now and the similar reaction to the Duke lacrosse case in 2006.

Since Duke’s integration, marginalized students and employees have fought tirelessly for an end to the oppressive environment Duke perpetuates.
We, students affiliated with the Women’s Center of Duke University, stand in solidarity with Duke University workers and the demands made to the administration not only in light of the recent violence from Tallman Trask, but in light of the violence historically faced by brown and black workers. We refuse to be silent in times of discrimination and abuse of power.

Blue Devils United fully supports the nine student occupiers in the Allen building today. We admire their courage as they attempt to serve as a catalyst for justice and confront racism within the university's employment system.
More than 40 years ago, students took over the Allen building and demanded a change to Duke's racial climate, just six years after black undergraduates first integrated the institution.
Regardless of what incident may have occurred on that day in August of 2014, this call for “amnesty” for the protestors is not a reasonable viewpoint.
On August 30,2014, Tallman Trask III, Executive Vice President of Duke University, hit Ms. Shelvia Underwood, a parking attendant, and drove away after a verbal exchange.
On Friday afternoon, nine Duke students initiated a sit-in at the Allen building in order to draw attention both to their continuing protests around the incident involving Executive Vice President Tallman Trask, his vehicle, and Shelvia Underwood.
Since Friday afternoon, a group of courageous Duke students occupied Allen building to express outrage at the racism that continues to simmer within our university, much of it unnoticed or unconsidered by the people running it.
