Failing the 40 percent

We encourage Duke to reform its student conduct process before more students lose faith in the imperfect adjudication process. Sexual assault is a clear problem at Duke, and there are innumerable factors working against sexual assault victims on-campus; our justice system should not exasperate an already painful process for victims.

Fix my parking

There are many reforms that could be undertaken to help rectify our broken parking system. The most pressing issue is the need for more transparency regarding PTS and its oversight.

Welcome, our 114th

More so than the president of DSG, the position of Young Trustee, or even the roles of certain administrators on campus, the editor-in-chief is front and center in terms of directly impacting the student experience.

A note from the chairs

For both of us, being on editorial board over most of our undergraduate years has clearly come to define our Duke experiences. Our widely differing backgrounds, and the different pathways that ultimately took us to The Chronicle, are testaments to the power of opinion journalism in bringing together dissimilar individuals on this widely divisive campus.

Vote a woman for Young Trustee

In the end, the vote within The Chronicle was split relatively evenly between Liz Brown and Amy Kramer. Given the recent discussions over the lack of female representation among Young Trustees, we believe that students this year should pay particular attention to gender when casting their votes for their next Young Trustee.

OPINION

Looking beyond the flyers

The aftermath of Young Trustee elections is often very much like a disappearing act—while trustees are elected with a great deal of fanfare, students know very little about their roles on the Board after their representatives assume their positions.

The heat is on in Pyeongchang

As we all tune into watch our American athletes for the gold in figure skating, ice curling, bobsledding and other winter favorites at the Pyeongchang Olympics, we should appreciate both the athletic showcase and the political tensions that are coming to a head.

OPINION

The downfall of DSG

What seems to be at the root of these bureaucratic debacles is that such tasks, while important, tend to fall wayside for many DSG members because they don’t have the same potential for self-aggrandizing glory as other initiatives do.

OPINION

Camelot 2.0

The American people do not require an abstract vision of a Camelot II going into 2020, but rather desperately need a politician and party willing to concretely embody and defend the values of diversity, human rights and freedom from a policy-based perspective.

Revisiting the ban

While the first year of the Trump administration has felt like a drawn-out one, we still can’t be sure of how much long term damage will be done by policies like these that are enacted for the xenophobes within his base. Time will only tell how this administration will change the course of history for the worse.

Last week on Grey's

In short, Grey's Anatomy has done its research and has included in the show-making process the voices of those it seeks to accurately represent, creating episodes that challenge its viewers to think critically and empathetically. Easily digestible for a mainstream audience, its thoughtful portrayals of social issues have the potential to change more minds and impact more lives.

Trumping out in Cameron

Politics and sports function in tandem. To assert that anyone should leave politics out of the discussion engages in a distorted reality in which entertainment is absent of any real-life influences and social consequences. Duke students should consider this when attending their next basketball game.

The Duke Chronicle
OPINION

Let's talk about politics

This piece alone stands little chance of altering Duke’s political culture overnight, but it remains our responsibility as Duke students to bring these issues to the forefront. Normalizing conversations over political issues outside of the current zero-sum paradigm dampens the fear of open discourse and facilitates greater understanding.

Addressing Aziz

In order to undo poisonous socializations that often lead to pervasive unwanted sexual experiences, we must stress the importance of restorative justice and critical unlearning processes.

Sizing up the shutdown

While partisan politics weren’t birthed in the Trump administration, this shutdown represents a type of bitterness and frustration that feels particularly concentrated.
