The Duke women’s golf team trailed by 12 strokes after the first round in Tennessee last week but stormed back to win by one stroke against a host of nationally ranked teams. This week, against less elite competition, Duke is hoping for the same result but a better start.

After several mistakes to begin the third quarter, it looked as if Duke would surrender a lead for the fourth-straight week, but it was not to be as the Blue Devils pulled out a 28-10 win Saturday at home. Ted Roof got his first win as the official head coach, and the Duke offense, led by Mike Schneider finally got on track against the Division I-AA opponent.

Roof and the Athletic Department have launched a number of initiatives to boost attendance, but Thursday's aborted pep rally raises questions about whether they will be successful.

At his weekly press briefing Monday head coach Ted Roof did not blame the Blue Devils extensive injuries at skill positions for Duke 0-3 start. Schneider, who was cleared to practice Monday following a concussion at Virginia Tech, and some of the other Blue Devils will likely be ready to go this week in the home opener against Maryland.

The Volunteers, however, did not quit and scored twice before the clock ran out. Then in overtime, it took Tennessee only seven minutes to score the game-winning goal. The seventh-seeded women's volleyball team was outlasted by second-seeded Maryland Friday night at the ACC Tournament. Duke played one of its best matches of the year against the Terrapins (24-7,) losing 3-2 and ending its season at 10-19 overall. Maryland would go on to defeat No. 6 Georgia Tech in the ACC Championship.
