Last year, Duke had a magical run, one of the best seasons in recent history. But the team that prevented a fairytale ending was Virginia, defeating the Blue Devils in both the ACC Championship and the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. The Cavaliers once again proved to be an Achilles’ heel, besting the home squad 6-1 in a hard-fought match Sunday afternoon.

As the Duke fencing season nears its end, the stakes are higher than ever. This weekend, the Blue Devils competed for the chance to go against the best of the best at the NCAA Championship. After losing to North Carolina 84-79 on his senior night, captain Jeremy Roach sat in front of his locker to talk to the media for presumably the last time at Cameron Indoor Stadium. His voice was low and his face stoic. He didn’t have much to say — he never has after a loss.

Kyle Filipowski hit two quick jumpers out of the halftime break to bring Duke within five after nearly 20 minutes of deep deficit. Jared McCain edged backwards and applauded, eyed the jubilant Cameron Crazies and grinned. Elliot Cadeau missed a free throw, Filipowski backed down his man and hit a 3-point jumper as the crowd went wild. Head coach Jon Scheyer kept his cool, squatting by the bench stone-faced as Tyrese Proctor nailed a trey of his own.

GREENSBORO, N.C.— A red sea flooded the stands Friday inside Greensboro Coliseum, with only small pockets of blue visible. This was nobody’s home court, but N.C. State fans showed up for their team in a way that was exponentially higher than Duke fans. And this no doubt had an effect on the Blue Devils’ performance in a game that was, by many measures, chaotic.
