There was no fall break for the Blue Devils, as they had two major ACC matchups on the road this weekend. After dropping a Friday clash with Boston College, Duke capped the weekend with a 3-0 sweep against Syracuse Sunday at the Women’s Building in Syracuse, N.Y.

The Blue Devils will have plenty to work with this season as they have an influx of talented returning and incoming players. From graduate students returning from injury to four incoming freshmen, the growing team has the Blue Devils “continuing to focus on team culture, which is in a good spot” and “working hard to get ready to get started,” according to head coach Jolene Nagel.

Duke enters 2023 looking to build on a strong 2022 season that included an impressive 17-9 overall record and a stellar 11-3 record at home. The Blue Devils have now been rewarded for this success with a top-20 ITA preseason ranking. What’s more, the team has retained most of its talent from last year. Of the student-athletes who competed in Duke’s final dual match of 2022 against Tennessee, only Sean Sculley and Edu Guell will not be returning this season.

If one only looked at the final score of 92-58, it may have seemed like Duke had no trouble winning Friday's game. However, the Blue Devils could not easily put away the Blue Hens. While they started out strong, jumping out to a 31-18 lead with less than nine minutes left in the first half, Delaware went on a 15-6 run and cut the lead down to six at halftime.

The Blue Devils returned home from its loss in Indianapolis with a strong start to the first half defined by efficient shooting and a rebound advantage. Delaware went on a 7-0 run late to keep it close, but Duke still leads the Blue Hens, the score 42-36 at the break.

Just as a tornado warning arrived at Duke, there was a whirlwind of a volleyball match inside Cameron Indoor Stadium. On Friday afternoon, Duke edged out Boston College 3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 25-13, 22-25, 17-15) to attain its 15th win of the season in a highly competitive game.

Sometimes, hitting the road can make a difference. After No. 25 Duke lost a close match 3-2 at home Friday against No. 6 Virginia, it bounced back on the road Sunday at Richmond to win 8-1. While the Blue Devils are 1-4 on their home turf, they are a slightly better 3-2 on the road.
