It all came down to No. 1 singles. With the team score tied at 3-3, Duke freshman Henrique Cunha calmly disposed of the top-ranked singles player in the country, Southern California’s Steve Johnson, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) to propel the Blue Devils (6-5) to a crucial 4-3 victory over the third-ranked Trojans (13-2). Cunha’s gritty performance allowed him to overcome a 3-2 second-set deficit and finish off Johnson in front of a large crowd at Ambler Tennis Stadium, which included his own personal cheering section.
Duke is hungry for victory. After starting the season ranked 19th, the Blue Devils have fallen out of the Top 25. A win against No. 4 Texas (11-1) at Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center Friday at 2 p.m., however, could change that fact.
Last year, Duke lost two heartbreaking contests against Maryland, including a 12-11 defeat in the ACC championship game. After graduating seven seniors—including two All-Americans—the new-look, No. 5 Blue Devils (4-0) seem prepared to tackle the No. 2 Terrapins (2-0) in their ACC opener 12:00 p.m. Saturday at Koskinen Stadium.
After two dominating 7-0 victories over No. 34 Notre Dame and N.C. Central early this month, No. 21 Duke again came out firing against No. 47 Virginia Commonwealth (6-4) Sunday. Continuing their hot play of late, the Blue Devils (5-2) convincingly defeated the Rams 6-1 in a match played at Thalhimer Tennis Center in Richmond, Va.
After convincing 16-6 and 19-10 victories over Denver and No. 11 Vanderbilt last week, No. 5 Duke travels to Virginia to face Richmond Friday at 3 p.m. and No. 20 William & Mary Sunday at 1 p.m. The Blue Devils (2-0) face the Spiders (0-1) and the Tribe (1-0) in a weekend series for the fourth year in a row and are aiming for their fourth consecutive sweep.
Few can forget Clemson’s 74-47 thrashing of Duke last February. The lopsided victory was the Blue Devils’ worst loss in more than 13 seasons. Such an embarrassment left head coach Mike Krzyzewski dumbfounded, sitting throughout much of the second half with his hands covering his blank face, questioning what had happened to his fourth-ranked team.
Coming off two dominating performances last week against Western Kentucky and Marquette in the Caribbean Challenge, No. 11 Duke faces one of its toughest tests Thursday in No. 3 Ohio State (8-0). The 7:00 p.m. game in Cameron Indoor Stadium provides the Blue Devils the opportunity to prove their worth against the best of the Big Ten as part of the third annual women’s Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
Coming off dominant performances last weekend in games against William & Mary and No. 20 Old Dominion, Duke seems prepared to tally two more wins in its away trip to the state of Ohio this weekend. There, No. 13 Duke will face stiff competition from Ohio (7-7) and No. 15 Ohio State (11-4), as both teams are in contention for their respective MAC and Big Ten conference titles.
Coming off a hard-fought overtime loss to archrival North Carolina last week, Duke battled No. 9 Wake Forest to a 0-0 overtime tie Thursday night at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem. The tie pushes Duke’s record to 4-4-3 and 0-1-1 in the ACC.
