A mere two weeks ago, a fatal terrorist attack took place on the steps outside British Parliament- injuring at least 50 people and killing 5 civilians. The assailant, Khalid Masood, drove his car into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge and then ran into the Palace of Westminster with two knifes. While the attack lasted only 82 seconds before Masood was shot dead, the strike reaffirmed long-lasting international fear of the Islamic State and relative terrorist organizations. However, it is still unclear if Masood was linked to ISIS or Al-Qaeda, despite ISIS claiming responsibility for the attack.
A worker bee never questions its duty to produce beeswax, just like a human lung never stops to think about its ability to breathe. What these seemingly unrelated things have in common is that they just do, and exist, without question. The only time these things stop functioning is when they cease to work properly and become less than their ideal form: never questioning in the meantime what is that they are doing.
It's 5:37 in the morning and I am sitting here, endlessly reading about the election as I sit in the common room and not even a second cup of coffee can energize me about the future of our fate. It's almost a week later and I still feel numb accepting Donald Trump as our president and am evermore frightened as biased, right wing cabinet selections are rolling in for his administration.
You might be wondering whether television drama has been having an identity crisis over the past few years or if society is just becoming increasingly entertained with dark, bleak cynicism. It is pretty odd that viewers are tuning into this new genre of humorlessness and tragedy, such as in "The Walking Dead," "Game of Thrones" or True Detective, over comedy and sitcoms. Why are we tuning into social unrest, political dissatisfaction and grim bleakness over canned laughter, predictable endings and cliché story lines that could leave us with instantaneous pleasure instead of general discontentment?
